    Cranking speed and viscocity

I am curious how much cranking speed is affected by viscosity in cold weather. Say it is -10 degrees Fahrenheit. Will I see a noticeable difference in cranking RPM between a 10w-30, a 5w-30, and a 0w-30?

6L90 fluid extraction ... on a sloped driveway

2016 2500HD. I have done a couple changes with an extractor, I get about 3 quarts out. Those were done with the truck parked on an incline facing uphill. Question - if I turn the truck around so that the truck is facing downhill, am I likely to get any more fluid out?

    Threadlocker spray?

I have a couple of oil pan bolts that are vibrating loose. I cannot reach them by hand, only by using a thin 1/4 inch extension and socket in between the oil pan and bellhousing plate. I think that if I remove them completely, it will be difficult to get the threads started again. If there...

    New family truckster

Family of 5, inland northwest area (eastern WA), with a large dog (malamute/husky mix). Looking for a daily driver, traditional 4x4, something we can take on the rugged forest roads of north Idaho with confidence. The other big priority is long-term durability. We are not too concerned about gas...

    Rate my cabin air filter

Should I bother replacing, or just maybe blow it out with a compressor and run it another 85k miles???

    Differentials and transfer cases

Just curious if anyone here has ever actually worn out a differential or transfer case. I would never do it, but it almost seems like a differential or transfer case will outlast the rest of a vehicle even if you never bother to change the fluid. Just seems like engine oil and trans fluid are...

    6L90 maintenance

2016 2500HD, 6.0 vortec. 100k very easy miles on the original transmission fluid. Pan drop and filter change, just use this? https://a.co/d/fWXtIwi Any benefit to using maxlife instead? Any other thoughts before I just go ahead and do the job?

What do you gain by UOA and extended drain interval?

A UOA from Blackstone cost $35 bucks, about the same as an oil change using a PF-48 and Supertech 5w-30 from Walmart. My 2016 2500HD has a 6.0 vortec and usually the OLM tells me to change the oil at around 6500 miles. If I want to extend my drain interval, I'd assume I'd go with a more...

    0w-40 for everything

I get tired of buying jugs and quarts of different oils for different vehicles to get about the right amount for each. I'm wondering whether I can just run 0w-40 Mobil 1 for all of these, just buy jugs and clear out some shelf space: 2016 6.0 vortec 2500hd with 105k miles 65 GTO 505 cid pontiac...

Ethylene glycol mixed with universal - coolant tester still work?

I have a couple applications - 65 GTO with aluminum radiator, 72 Chevy K10 and 97 Jeep TJ with stock radiators, that use traditional green coolant. Looks like the old green stuff is being slowly replaced on the shelf with universal coolants. My question is this - can I still use my old Prestone...

    Gas station 10w-40 conventional

Suppose I want to be able to just run any old 10w-40 in a hod rod with a roller cam. Aluminum heads, hyd roller, holley, headers, you know the deal. Don't rev any higher than 6000 rpm, change the oil once a year after no more than 2500 miles. Why not just run a cheap 10w-40 syn blend and top...

pp 5w30 vs supertech full synthetic

2016 2500HD, 6.0 vortec, 70k miles. AAFES has Pennzoil Platinum for about a buck more than Walmart supertech when you consider that I don't pay WA sales tax at AAFES. Does PP have any advantage over Supertech full synthetic? I never saw any reason to run anything other than Supertech, but if...

    Overheated brakes

I have a 72 K10 longbed. A few years ago we took it hunting and my brother drove it a really long way riding the brakes, because the road was really rough and even just idling along in 4 LO was too fast for comfort. The brakes got hot and faded and the truck didn’t stop very well. We let them...

Most primitive engine in recently available vehicles

Was just wondering whether there is anything sold recently, since 2015 or so, with a more primitive engine than a 6.0 vortec? My 2500HD has the L96 engine - pushrod v8, port injection, vvt, no AFM, no turbo, no direct injection. Has anything less technically advanced been sold in a passenger...

    Valvoline VR-1 vs. synthetic

There was a recent thread about whether conventional oils have any advantages over synthetics. Seemed like a controversial topic but it got me thinking about VR-1, which Valvoline describes as a "conventional" oil but that still gets a lot of positive reviews, including on this forum. Is there...

    Dextron VI observation

2016 2500HD, 6.0 flex fuel engine and 6L90 transmission. 56k of very light usage, nearly zero towing but using 4x4 on occasion in the winter. Changed the transfer case fluid and checked the transmission dipstick for the first time recently. Transfer case fluid was brown and nasty looking...

    Car maintenance and home equity

I saw some comments about wealth building in another thread and got to thinking about how lots of us maintain our cars to save money, both on labor and by keeping them running for a long time. My first thought was, jeez, compared to the wealth you can build by owning a home, the money you save...

    M1 15w50 cold start temp

Thanks to recommendations from this board, I recently changed over to M1 15w50 in a 505 CID hydraulic roller Pontiac engine. Have not driven the car yet. What is a safe cold start temp for this oil? I have a magnetic pan heater, how cold would it have to be to bother with the oil pan heater?

    Great few days on BITOG

I’m not a regular, posted here before but got really active over the past few days because a few things came up. In just a few days on BITOG, I did the following: (1) Found out Mobil makes a nice synthetic 15w50 that will work well in my 65 GTO. (2) Found out that Michelin makes a couple of...

    Long lasting snow tires

I have a 2500HD and been running the Blizzak w965 in the winter. Love the tire so far, but the Blizzaks have the multi-cell compound that only goes about halfway into the tread. I am getting close to running them down past the multicell compound and thinking about next winter. Is there an...
