    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

moribundman, you're not obnoxious! In regard to the importance of HTHS, I will say that it is important that it's at least 3.5 for some or most EU engines. Keep in mind that HTHS limits for ACEA A2 'general purpose oil', A3 'high-performance extended drain oil', and Audi/VW 500/502 oil are...

    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

ASTM D 4683, ASTM D 4741, CEC-L-36-A-90 produce the same HTHS numbers. 4683 measures HTHS by tapered bearing simulator, and 4741 (J300/ACEA) by tapered plug viscometer.

    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

moribundman, I don't understand why you are latching onto HTHS. I'm sure all oil test parameters change with usage. No parameter is guaranteed to be stable with usage. Well it's only promising if your engine requires it or performs "better" with it. More is not necessarily better.

    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

I don't know. My best guess is that HTHS viscosity would change with age like any other viscosity measurement, i.e., "stay-in-grade" or thin or thicken (soot) [ July 28, 2003, 06:51 PM: Message edited by: geo ]

    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

A viscometer is used to measure viscosity at 150°C and 1 million reciprocal seconds shear rate. That is what HTHS viscosity is. [ July 28, 2003, 06:16 PM: Message edited by: geo ]

    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

4DR Turbo, I believe that M1 0w-40 is one of the best PCMOs (OTS or not). And, as long as your oil consumption is relatively low with this oil - for the benefit of your cat, rings, etc., I would use it. Newer VW/Audi engines esp. with K03 turbos have narrower passages, higher oil flow rates...

    1.8T VW oil weight

The US does not have this particular 1.8 engine as of yet. I don't believe there are any 503.00 oils in the US. Although A5-02 has an HTHS of 2.9-3.5, it does not meet all the other requirements of 503.00. Using anything more than 1/2 liter of 502.00 (high HTHS) oil could cause damage in this...

    1.8T VW oil weight

The 561B and Mann filters are the best filters for your engine. Remember, using an LL filter and oil does not allow you run LongLife WIV service intervals. If you are interested in trying a "bobistheoilguy" extended drain, fine. Since you are using an excellent oil and filter, I would follow the...

    Mobil 1 0w-40 HT/HS

If this has already been said, please ignore. M1 0W-40 was designed specifically this way to meet the demanding A3/B3/B4 specification, and still meet the fuel efficiency requirements (and other requirements) of MB 229.3/5, Audi/VW 503.01 LongLife, etc. Mobil accomplished this with one oil...

    1.8T VW oil weight

Yuk, For the 1.8, use Audi LL filter 06A 115 561B or newer, which superceded 034 115 561A. Mann also makes a filter specifically for Audi/VW LL. The part number is W 719/30 which superceded W 719/25, and is available at most VW/Audi parts websites. No other filter company that I am aware of...

    1.8T VW oil weight

moribundman, The same has happened to me - it's hard to read small print when picture resolution is changed. In EU, all A4 and S4 engines after #8DYA 000001, except for the pump nozzle diesel engines, are LongLife WIV (LL) service. I do not know what mechanical changes were made on all these...

    1.8T VW oil weight

Yuk, I'd use an oil that is 502/503.01, or 500.00 approved - try the Mobil or Castrol. Then check the UOA. Also, if you burn oil (and some Audi/VW engines do - 1 qt/2000 is considered high normal), try a different brand and/or viscosity. My '96 500/501-spec engine guzzles M1 0W-40. Pentosin...

    1.8T VW oil weight

Pg 54 of 66 of the doc you referred to confirms that 502.00 and 500.00 have identical HTHS (min 3.5).

    1.8T VW oil weight

moribundman, The QG1 1.8 engine, as of May 1999 (MY 2000), uses LongLife (or WIV - variable up to 30km/2yr maintenance interval extension) 503.00 (low HTHS) oil. This engine has tighter tolerances on "highly loaded engine parts (?)", higher oil flow rate, I believe a better oil cooler, and a...

    pennz. LL 15w-40 in a 1981 bmw 318i

SL Phos max limit does not pertain to 15W-40, only to xW-20/30 oils. [ July 23, 2003, 12:18 AM: Message edited by: geo ]

M1 Delvac 5W40 good in gasoline engines?

It does carry the SL classification, but because it's a 5W-40, it does not have the .10 max phosphorus limit that the xW-30 oils have.

    HT/HS of VW503.01?

I wish I could say that about US Audi dealers. They still love to push dino bulk oil. [ July 22, 2003, 03:57 AM: Message edited by: geo ]

    HT/HS of VW503.01?

Yuk, According to Audi, only MY 2000 1.8T (May 1999) engines can use WIV extended drain schedule (2 yr/30,000 km). I don't know if seal and mechanical changes were made to the 1.8T before May 1999. Also, WIV extended drains are specified for EU, not for the US, although engines are identical...
