    Short Tripper On Synthetic ?

Not familiar with the car, but it would have to be extraordinarily hard on oil for 5,000mi/6mo interval on syn to be insufficient. That's the interval I use for my Toyota Sienna, which is [censored] on oil, and I haven't had any problems. "Severe service" is pretty subjective; as long as the...

Mobil 1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30 for Northeast Winters?

    Interesting. I am a short-tripper, with a home-to-work distance of about a mile.

Mobil 1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30 for Northeast Winters?

FWIW, I've run both M1 0W-40 and GC 0W-30 in my Passat B5.5 1.8T in the winter, and the fuel economy is substantially better with M1. Since M1 meets the manufacturer's specs, that's what I'm sticking with.

    80,000 Triple Tred Review

Just gotta say that I've got a set of TripleTreds on my Sienna, and I think that they're the best all-around set of tires I've ever had on this or any other car. Good traction in rain & snow (for a non-winter tire), stable @ highway speeds, decent-wearing, fairly quiet, ride good if not exactly...

    Walmart Oil for VW 1.8T?

Hi All- I have a VW Passat B5.5 sedan with the 1.8T engine, which I know is an infamous sludge monster. I stopped by my local Autozone to buy 5 quarts of M1 0W-40, and I noticed that the price had risen to $7.99. GC was the same price. That struck me as ridiculous. In my area, Walmart seems...

what, if any, oil for 1yr OIC in Toyota 1mz-fe

    1. There might be a big difference between how oil X would react to a 8k OCI vs. a 12k OCI. 2. Just from reading about different oils on this board, I think that GC might do what you want. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has tried it on this particular engine. 3. My VW Passat 1.8T has...

2002 VW Passat 1.8t sludge recommendations

Interesting . . . where is GC? I don't want to hijack my own thread, so I'll post a new one.

2002 VW Passat 1.8t sludge recommendations

75k? You must be kidding. Mine failed @ 35k. Has VW ever replaced the plastic impeller water pump with a metal one, and if so, is there any way to find out if I have the metal one; i.e., if there is a metal pump, does it have a different part no. than the plastic one? Are you talking about a...

2002 VW Passat 1.8t sludge recommendations

VeeDubb, maybe this makes sense... For the first 3 yrs. or so, I always brought my own M1 0w40 to the dealership. Then, after VW instructed its dealers to use synthetic on the 1.8t, I just let the dealership put there own oil in, which was supposedly Syntec 5w40. So perhaps I should switch back...

2002 VW Passat 1.8t sludge recommendations

Here's the short version... 2002 VW Passat 1.8t, 57k miles. 5-6k OCIs. Only oils ever used MI 0w40 or U.S. Syntec 5w40. Saw sludge deposits on oil filler cap. Asked dealership to check it out. VW has 8 yr./80k mi. sludge warranty, right? Tech. wrote "Inspection found some build up, if...

    Sienna sludge???

Just to clarify- for the last 6 or 7 OCIs, I never went over 5k miles, I used Syntec 5w-30 once or twice, used M1 HM 5w-30 once, and used regular M1 5w-30 for the balance. My guess is that the engine never would've made it to 85k if I had kept using dino. OTOH, the ability of the above-listed...

    Sienna sludge???

P.S. to this thread... After considering all the responses, I thought that the best couse of action was to take the car to Derek @ his Toyota dealership, since the car was still under warranty for sludging. Sure enough, the engine had sludged. Derek said that he'd seen much worse, but that I...

    Sienna sludge???

until about 50k, I just used random dino oil- interval was usually 5k, but once I let it go 12k at 50 k I started using synthetic I think PCV was replaced @30 & 60k, but I'm not sure

    Sienna sludge???

Hi All- I have a 2000 Toyota Sienna with 85k miles. the car has been used mostly for local, non-highway driving. I never noticed the car using oil in until I took it on a 2000 mi. + trip three years ago- mostly highway driving @ 75mph. Then the car was about a quart low at every fill up (400...
