Nicest plastic push rivet I've ever seen - what's it called?

I'm working on a GM for the first time in a long time and some of the plastic under the hood is retained with these plastic push rivets that have a twist off top. I've seen plenty of the regular push ones, and even ones with Phillips heads, but haven't seen these before. I'm trying to search...

    Stuck/broken bolt advice

And it's all back together. The left hand bits didn't do anything a regular one wouldn't have since I had to drill out 95% of the bolt. I was able to salvage enough with a tap that I didn't need to do a helicoil. The threads are a little rough but they're holding fine. Thanks for all the...

    Discount Tire Introduces Tire Scanner

That's what you think! DT says you're here to be sold tires. 😆 There's a marketing angle for sure. Some analyst has a spreadsheet that estimates payback time for these machines based on telling Scott or Karen this fancy machine says they need new tires for their Crosstour or Sienna. The same...

This is the whole part. There are 10 bolts around the perimeter and the 2 inline with the spark plug wells.

    Stuck/broken bolt advice

You don't know what you're missing! Spray seawater over your undercarriage every day from December to March for 10 years to get a similar effect. I owned 2 broncos and an OBS F250 and never worked on any of them without needing the BFH and some propane but this fiddly stuff is new ground. 😂 Set...

    Stuck/broken bolt advice

It's not a head bolt. It only needs to be sealed enough to hold intake vacuum Out of all the different ways stuck bolts can be removed, looking for advice on how THIS situation is best handled.

    Stuck/broken bolt advice

I'm working on a Mini Cooper S to replace the cylinder cover. I managed to get the whole thing off without breaking any of the plastic pieces BUT I did break a bolt off in the head. You can see it here just to the right of the spark plug well. Here's the one that DIDN'T break for reference...

Fed Up with Driving a Manual Transmission?

I have always loved my manuals, yes even in traffic, maybe even ESPECIALLY in traffic. I can outshift any slushbox so I can take advantage of much smaller holes in packed surface street traffic. Sure modern transmission tech can shift faster but that's all theoretical given my car budget. On...

PQIA tests nine more 5W-20s, plus a master chart

Well, I guess that's my last fill of MC semi-syn. It had a nice run and was one of the first 5w20s that I could depend on being available but I think it would be silly to not go to PYB next time around. The moly fiends must be drooling right now.

Window replacement - real glass or plastic

I need to replace a window courtesy of a ping-pong paddle that "somehow" went flying. It's old so replacing the pane is straightforward but I was thinking maybe I'd use plastic instead to make this the last time I have to repair this one. I haven't compared pricing but it looks like the...

How Many Generations of Backups to Keep?

If you're ONLY doing it to recover from a sudden hardware failure then 2 is plenty: one to have sitting while the other gets overwritten in making a new one. However, if you're trying to cover for corruption, accidental deletion or a series of bad backups then you'll need many more. How long...

    New Monitors Not 1080p

My desktop monitor is starting to die and I'm trying to find a replacement for it that is NOT shaped like a TV screen. I have a CRT in the shed that has a traditional aspect ration but at 22" it weighs about 40# and it too is on its last legs. 1080p is great if all you do is watch movies on your...

    wrenching with 1/4" drive

3/8 can't get into where 1/4 can and can't take the torque of the 1/2. 1/4 is where I start, moving to 1/2 when that's not enough beef. I never use 3/8 if I can help it unless it's a special bit and then I'm left rummaging to find the ratchet if there's not enough room for the 1/2>3/8 reducer.
