    Cylinder Head Oil Pockets

What are they for? I'm talking about heads that have been obviously designed with a "pocket" formed of ribs, the valve cover rail and a valve guide boss. This pocket traps oil from the cam bearings and holds it next to the valve guide boss. This oil does not drain unless the head is inverted...

How much engine damage was done?

Just an educated guess, Damage to the turbine bearings is probably light to moderate with little or no damage to the rest of the engine, yet. A UOA will give a better picure IMO. Look for wear metals from the turbine bearings. I would think repairs, if any, should be based on the UOA with other...

    UOA to ID ATF type

I have considered tuneup issues, but it does have fresh plugs and I checked the distributor caps, rotors & wires. Timing is fixed. Throttle body is black but does not appear restricted. If the problems continue or get worse & a subsequent flush doesn't fix it I'll check the throttle body in more...

    UOA to ID ATF type

The car has 83,000 miles now, it had 80,000 when I bought it last month. I had the flush done about a week after I bought it because the fluid was brown, almost black and smelled a little burnt. The tech thought the flush was the right thing to do, and they did charge me for 16 quarts of Toyota...

    UOA to ID ATF type

Is there such a thing? I have a 1993 Lexus SC400 that uses Toyota Type II ATF. I had the dealer flush the trans recently and now it shudders going uphill at light throttle. I'm beginning to suspect they may have put Dexron instead of the Toyota ATF. So if get a sample of the ATF to a lab, can...

    Toyota 90915-YZZB5

I cut open the filter I photographed within a week of getting it from the dealer, and rust had already started on the back plate, which is clearly visible in the photos. In this particular filter there is no exposed metal downstream of the element, so any rust that does form and dislodge should...

    Toyota 90915-YZZB5

I've previously posted pics of this filter here: It definitely has a bypass, and I've been using them on my '94 V6 Toy 4x4 PU for the last year. I remain very impressed. I'm currently at 870 miles in the second phase of an AuoRX treatment, and the oil is cleaner than it was using "standard"...

    Marvel Mystery Oil

My dad was a test pilot and A&P mechanic in the Air Force during WWII. I learned most of the mechanical skills I have from him. I also learned about MMM from him. He was involved in the transport of aircraft across the atlantic, and when I asked him about MMM he told me that he didn't really...

    Oil Filter Internal Views

The 90915-YZZB5 filter as shown has the same mounting threads and gasket base size as the Fram PH-8A, Motorcraft FL1-A, etc. I didn't measure the size 'cause I already knew it fit my Toyota truck V6. I get these filters from the local stealership, without a discount, for about $6.50 each...

    Oil Filter Internal Views

You guys MADE me do it, so I figured this was the best place. Internal views of the Toyota filter for their new V8's: I think you will agree this is a unique filter. Nice back plate with a unique seal. This thing is hard to get off the engine once it's on. A side view of the...

Update on the sludged 3.4/ 4 runner

See those covers on the inside of the valve cover? They hide baffles for the PCV system. I hope you can unbolt those and clean 'em out, 'cause I guarantee they are full of sludge!! I've seen it make a big difference in the PCV system operation, and I've seen 'em sludge up on otherwise un-sludged...
