High mile 4.6 Ford - Ok to use heavier oil?

I used 10w-30 high mileage in my 4.6 Mustang simply because I didn't have to add any between changes, while with 5w-20, between the leaks and slight consumption, I did.

a california emissions car purchase workaround confusion...

As far as I know, you can register a federal emissions vehicle in CA as long as it's "used," which legally means that it has more than 7,500 miles on it. It will be tested to federal emissions standards. Back in the day, my 2000 Cavalier was originally a North Carolina vehicle.

    2024 Mazda CX5 W/O Cylinder Deactivation

I'll gladly take an electric vehicle over any of these new engines with start/stop, cylinder deactivation, turbo everything, and whatever other nonsense they're putting on them these days.

What are you working on today?

Spark plugs on the Firebird. Got the driver's side done, planning to tackle the passenger side tomorrow. Since I had to break out the borescope/inspection camera anyways to be able to see what I was doing under the exhaust manifold, I decided to take a look inside one of the cylinders since I...

    New tool thread

It's the 7,000 lb QuickJack so I can use it on the XTerra too. It has mechanical locks so I don't see the need for jack stands.

Post your latest screw-ups (here's mine!)

Supposed to be an o-ring seal on the coolant passage between the upper and lower intake manifolds. Instead it became a mangled mess.

    New tool thread

I have the yellow Daytona and it's useful if I need to do something quick like take a tire off, but I got one of these as a Christmas present to myself that I've been using the crap out of lately.

    Real world pickup fuel mileage?

I recall getting ~20 in mixed driving with my 2012 Tacoma with the 2.7. In pure freeway driving I think the best I did was 23. Towing a trailer on a long trip with the bed full of gear, 15.

Post your latest screw-ups (here's mine!)

Finally got everything back together on the Firebird after changing the upper and lower intake gaskets, along with the heater hoses and upper/lower rad hoses for good measure. Pull a vacuum on the cooling system to refill it and the needle JUST. WILL. NOT. MOVE!!! Hook up some compressed and...

Post your Gas Mileage : Calculated

Lifetime efficiency 4.5 mi/kwh over 59,000 miles. I haven't even run a full tank through the Firebird since buying it in September and the XTerra hasn't moved in 2 years except for a smog check...

Under the valve cover 2005 Buick 3800.

I just did all this on my 1998 Firebird with the 3800; someone put a reman engine in it at some point (going to suspect intake gasket failure as well, as that's about the only way you can kill one) and whoever installed it used only RTV and no o-rings between the upper and lower intakes where...

What are you working on today?

Correct. And I shouldn't have to be doing this job at all, I was told that mine had a rebuilt engine in it and judging by how clean the valve train and lifter valley are, I believe it. But whoever put it in must have not had a gasket for the upper intake where the thermostat housing bolts to...

    1999 Camaro - Couldn't resist.

They do. My solution is to park in the garage and not drive it on the handful of days a year that it rains!

    Post your latest parts purchase

A whole bunch of stuff for my new flaming avian... Don't know when (or if) any of it was last done, so I've loaded up the parts cannon a bit. Thermostat and temp sender because it's running a bit cold and the gauge and OBD numbers disagree, so one of the two should fix it. Ordered a...

Gasoline compatiblity of generic radiator / heater hose material ?

They must be different. I tried to use "heater hose" to re-route the evap vent in my XTerra (comes out on the frame rail and plugs with dirt if you off-road) and it had developed "dry rot"-type cracking when I happened to look at it again during another repair. I can't think of any other reason...

    1999 Camaro - Couldn't resist.

Nice catfish. I have the Pontiac equivalent of the same vintage, the 3.8/5-speed is fine. Have you seen the prices people are asking for the V8s these days? I couldn't justify it.

I guess I have a thing for '90s GM junk...

Honestly I an entertaining the idea of converting it to electric sometime in the distant future, GM has an "e-crate" motor in the works but battery prices are high and I'm not sure that's an undertaking I'd want to start any time soon, so I'll drive it as-is for a good while. 200 hp and instant...

I guess I have a thing for '90s GM junk...

I had a convertible Mustang and after replacing the top and headliner, I told myself never again. Opted for the T-Tips in the Firebird, as glass is much less likely to wear out!

I guess I have a thing for '90s GM junk...

Thank you, didn't know that about the windows and everything I've come across so far is just about replacing the motors and not about changing the wiring or anything. Good tip and I'll have to look into that.
