Why Did GM Route the Heater Return Hose to the Radiator on AT Equipped Trucks in the 70s-80s?

Does anyone know why GM routed the heater hose return line to the cold tank of the radiator? These trucks didn’t have heater control valves so the flow is constant. It seems to me that dumping hot coolant on to the transmission cooler is counterproductive. I rerouted the hose to the water...

    Generator Carb Problems

We have a Cummins Onan QC 4000 generator on our RV that doesn't get a lot of use. It was last run in August, & has been inactive ever since (about 7 months). Now it won't start. Our RV dealer doesn't work on generators, they sub it out, & there's warranty questions, so the shop foreman tried to...

Hypereutectic Pistons & High Zinc Oils

I have heard recently that using high zinc oil in an engine with hypereutectic pistons will "remove the hypereutectic coating & ruin the piston". My understanding is the piston is an alloy of silicon & aluminum to limit expansion & allow tighter cold clearances. How can zinc degrade that?

Where can I find Amsoil Locally?

I just changed my oil, only had 5qt, I need one more, any major stores in CA carry it?

    Amsoil SS vs Z-ROD

OK, so the Signature Series has the best wear protection, so why would I need higher ZDDP for flat tappet engines? Also isn't the timing chain another source of shearing, so would higher ZDDP levels extend the chain life as well? AFAIK, the reason ZDDP was reduced is to keep phosphorus out of...

    Is Dexcool Really That Bad?

My 2000 Montana's transmission failed, so we rebuilt it, & while the engine was out, we replaced everything likely to have issues. One of those issues is the infamous 3.4 intake manifold gasket which is prone to leaking coolant into the crankcase. The gaskets were soft & spongy at the coolant...

Where is best place to take oil sample?

Is it better to take a sample during a drain, like about halfway through? Or is it better to stick the tube down the dipstick? I have read where taking it while draining will pull metal from the drain plug threads. But if you drop a tube down the dipstick you don't know where the tube will end...

    Letting Oil Drain Overnight

I like to let the oil drain overnight (or all day) or longer. I know there will always be oil left in the motor, but at least that much more is out. My high school friend’s dad had a gas station & he let his car drain all day, said the oil seemed to stay clean longer. I have now been told that...

Why are there holes in the cross hatched area of an oil dipstick?

My Chevy Express 6.0 has 5 holes on the dipstick between Add & Full, what is the reason for these? Seems like each hole is 8oz. apart.

700R4 Blowing Fluid Out the TV Cable

Hey, this trans has done this before and after the complete rebuild/upgrade. The vent is open and clear. My first observation is when draining the fluid (I have a pan with a drain plug) is that it glugs. Removing the dipstick alleviates this. Also if you refill it with more than 4 quarts before...

Battery Tender Jr. vs. Noco Genius1

Anyone know if the Genius1 will actually desulfate a battery? I have (2) of the Genius1 that I bought on Amazon for $18.00 each with a Lightning Deal in June 2021, regular price $29.95. I bought the Battery Tender Jr. for $19.98 in May of 2019. The price doubled so I went with the Noco. They are...

Are Amsoil EAO Filters Actually Better?

Amsoil EAO filters tout 99% filtration @20microns, but the test done by Ascent Filtration Labs shows Fram XG 99% @15microns. For the price, I would hope Amsoil is a better quality filter, but Fram seems to filter down pretty well. Any thoughts?

    AGM vs. Flooded

This seems to be an on-going debate, but seriously, what is the advantage to an AGM over a flooded? This is going in the 2008 Enclave, which has the battery in the floor behind the passenger seat. It has a tube to vent to the outside, the Delco 48PG that is specified for this is not AGM I...

AC Delco Professional (48PG) Date Code

I bought my battery In late November/early December of 2018. The date code says Feb 2019. Do they pre-date these to allow for time for transportation and storage? I got it from a pretty busy AC Delco supplier, so it obviously didn't sit very long.

    A/C Recharge 2000 Pontiac Montana Rear A/C

I thought I better start a new thread, don't mean to hijack. This is my question copy&pasted from mrlawnguy thread on 7/27/21 My compressor stopped working I assumed due to low pressure. I pushed the Schrader valve in, still had a tiny bit of pressure, so I assumed the system hadn't sucked in...

GM Moving Oil Pressure Regulator Location and New Pumps

The reason I put this in the Engine Oil Filter thread is that GM has specified higher bypass valve pressure differential settings due to this new innovation. I have attached the TSB from 2017 describing it. I have seen mentions of lower than expected oil pressure from these later GM V8s. Also...

    Valvoline ATF Dexron VI/Mercon LV & Ultra1Plus

Valvoline fluid says "Officially licensed and GM* approved DEXRON*-VI Fluid", but there is no license number on the label. Also "recommended" for Mercon LV applications. Why would they not publish the license number on the label? I have a list of GM Dexron VI licensees, Valvoline has 2 US...
