how much oil do you keep on hand?

Sometimes I have more, sometimes less. I buy when there's a good clearance or rebate. Here's what I have on hand now: Oil - 5W30 (quarts) Rotella Gas Truck Syn 18 Pennzoil Platinum Syn 15 Quaker State Syn 10 Castrol Edge Syn 5 Valvoline Syn 7.75 Oil - 10W30 (quarts)...

    M1 ATF Discontinued?

I got a reply from Mobil and they said: "Our Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is an active product." So their official position is that it is not currently discontinued.

    M1 ATF Discontinued?

Essentially they have these 2 ATFs: https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/our-products/products/mobil-1-synthetic-atf/ https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/our-products/products/mobil-1-synthetic-lv-atf-hp/ What's strange is that if you look at the...

    M1 ATF Discontinued?

So does anyone *know* if the M1 ATF *is* being discontinued? Their website still shows it--I'm only basing this on some auto parts stores' clearances.

    M1 ATF Discontinued?

Looking at your signature, I can see you have older (and higher mileage) Toyotas than mine, so that's good to know! :) I know Dex VI and Maxlife are both lower viscosity than the M1 ATF so it is good to know you've put lots of miles on it.

    M1 ATF Discontinued?

Guys, I saw that Advance Auto Parts had Mobil 1 ATF on clearance for $1.75. They were saying it was discontinued. I now see that Auto Zone has it on clearance for $6. Is this product (the Dex III ATF that has been around forever) truly being discontinued by the manufacturer? I've used this...

Anyone else watch Two Guys Garage on Motortrend? Noticed this...

Agree. I usually flip through those segments that are 100% ads and see if there is anything interesting. I record stuff like this to watch in bed to help me fall asleep. :-)

Anyone else watch Two Guys Garage on Motortrend? Noticed this...

There isn't some alternate spelling of Dexron that I'm unfamiliar with, is there? I was watching Two Guys Garage on Motortrend the other day and they were showing an episode dedicated to fluids and maintenance and I noticed this. Not once, but twice (edit: actually 3 times!) they misspelled Dexron.

2012 Toyota Highlander, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6, 5W30 Valvoline Adv Full Synthetic, SuperTech Filter, 7580 miles

Yeah, it looks like a good oil and would absolutely use it again. I have no data for comparison because this is the first analysis I've done on the vehicles AND I use whatever I get on sale or with a rebate. I have M1 in it right now. I always use good synthetic, but I stock up when I can find...

2012 Toyota Highlander, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6, 5W30 Valvoline Adv Full Synthetic, SuperTech Filter, 7580 miles

Yeah, I'm sure I'll stick to around 7500 miles, but it is good to know it can be extended if I need to for some reason. I change it myself, so if the weather is terrible it is good to know I can wait a week or two. 7500 miles is what I've always done on my 2002 Tacoma, and I'm over 250K miles...

2012 Toyota Highlander, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6, 5W30 Valvoline Adv Full Synthetic, SuperTech Filter, 7580 miles

Exactly! That's why I figured standardizing on 5W30 was fine. :-) And while oil analysis doesn't show everything, I'm confident that 5W30 synth is working as well or better than the 0W20 synth. To be clear, I have nothing against the thinner oil. I have no agenda. And if I bought a new car I'd...

2012 Toyota Highlander, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6, 5W30 Valvoline Adv Full Synthetic, SuperTech Filter, 7580 miles

No, none at all. At least nothing detectable. Could it be .1 MPG better? Possibly. I don't chart it. But the car's computer is reporting the same basic mpg it has always reported, which varies depending on more city/highway obviously. We usually get around 23 MPG in normal driving. On our road...

2012 Toyota Highlander, 2GR-FE 3.5L V6, 5W30 Valvoline Adv Full Synthetic, SuperTech Filter, 7580 miles

I've owned this 2012 Highlander since 2015 when I bought it with 24K miles on it. I've always changed the oil and filter between 7000-10,0000 miles. I'd always used 0W20 up until around 140K miles when I switched to 5W30 synthetic. I didn't have a *reason* to do so aside from the fact that my...

Switching brands almost every oil change

I change oil on 3 vehicles (mine, my wife's, my son's). Once or twice a year I stock up when someone has a sale and a rebate. I rarely pay more than $10-12 for a 5-qt jug of synthetic after rebate. I currently have a stash of around 70 quarts of Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol, Quaker State...

    TOYOTA OIL FILTER CUT OPEN

Absolutely. I especially like how the end is sealed with plastic and the o-ring is pre-lubricated.

    TOYOTA OIL FILTER CUT OPEN

I'd say they are plenty good enough. Whether they have all of the features you're looking for or not, they meet Toyota's quality standards and therefore probably will not fail. I've been using them at virtually every oil change on my Tacoma since I bought it new in 2002. 20 years and over a...

Question about possible coolant in oil

Yeah, I'll probably do that too and keep an eye on it between now and then.

Question about possible coolant in oil

I made a note of exactly where the coolant line is on the overflow tank when cold. Took a pic. I’ll wait a week and see if there’s a change. There is absolutely no evidence of coolant in the oil on the dipstick or under the fill cap or in what I can see in the crankcase. The oil looks clean and...

Question about possible coolant in oil

There are no signs of oil in the coolant.

Question about possible coolant in oil

One additional thought as I wracked my brain: I did accidentally overfill the washer fluid reservoir and it overflowed and dripped down while I was draining the oil. I always do other things like that while waiting for the oil to drain. I’m wondering if some possibly got into the drain pan. The...
