1996 Caillac Sedan De Ville - good car?

An acquaintance is selling this, he's the third owner. It has a NorthStar V8 in it. Says it doesn't leak or burn oil. Carfax is clean. Car itself is in pretty good shape considering it's age. Everything works. AC compressor was replaced last year. Just passed smog in CA, so that's a good...

Valvoline MaxLife synthetic mix with M1?

I think I'm likely OK, but thought I'd ask the experts to chime in. I bought 4 quarts of MaxLife synthetic that I got for free with the rebate offer, 10W30. My truck takes about 6 quarts. I use M1 10W30. So I'd have to add about 2 quarts of M1 to the 4 quarts of MaxLife to fill my crankcase...

The big picture doesn't favor hybrids

Interesting article in this week's Automotive News... I'd like to see the methodology behind his reasoning, though at a glance it makes some sense. Art Spinella has really done it this time. Spinella, president of CNW Marketing Research in Bandon, Ore., has devised a way of comparing the...

    Video--Koenig CCX 800+HP

Top Gear used to be on Discovery Channel from time to time. Supposedly they are producing an American version of it. I doubt it will be as good as the original, unless they can get Jeremy Clarkson to host it. You can download pat episodes here: http://www.finalgear.com/ Fifht Gear episodes...

    Persistent Spark Knock

My Expedition had a slight knock... replacing the EGR & DPFR sensor got rid of most of it, plugs took care of the rest. Could be lots of things...plugged cats could cause it, you'll often get a CEL but not always. Could be O2 sensors... Are the current plugs the correct heat range? You may...

Adjust valves in a Toyota Sequoia V8?

My co-worker's car is at the dealership for an oil change. The service writer just called, said that they recommend a valve adjustment, to the tune of $500. Basically, they are trying to frighten him by saying "well, if the valves get too far out of adjustment, you'll need a new engine." I...

    Semi-homemade cooking with Sandra Lee

Anyone watch this show? Just started getting into it. Beside the fact that she's a hottie...I like how she makes great-tasting meals using a combination of both fresh (like veggies) and prepared (like frozen or canned) ingredients. Sometimes, I just don't have the time to do-up an entire meal...

Grease reco for ball-type end links

I've got a lower stress-bar on my GTI that has greasable end links. You can see them in the picture below. They're ball-joint-type end links. Any recommendations on a long-lasting grease to use? I've got some Mobil 1 grease at home, but don't know much about grease. Thanks!

    Knife sharpeners (Global knives)

I've got a couple of Global knives that obviously need sharpening from time to time. Trouble is, local knife shops tell me that there is a "special" blade on these knives, and they won't sharpen them. (Methinks they don't want to help me because I didn't buy from them...) The shop I bought...

    Pots n' Pans recommendation

Well, I'm realizing that cheap cookware isn't doing me any favors. But the prices for some of the "premium" cookware I've been seeing is outrageous. Any brand of cookware that offers good value? Also, what do you guys think would be a good "starter" set? What I mean is, what are some good...

    Neglected Taurus: Need advise

My girl just got her 2000 Taurus back from her parents. It has 140K miles on it, and has been seriously neglected, semi-regular oil changes are all it has had. Of course, there's no owner's manual to be found. Car seems to run OK, not smoking or anything. Has a misfire on #5 (it's the flex-fuel...

Hybrids bad for long-term US economy?

Excerpted from this week's Automotive News. Significant negative economic impact of hybrid sales, according to the author. An interesting point of view to consider: As Toyota's Prius is the market-dominating and iconic hybrid, it is the logical subject for a discussion of hybrids and economics...
