High mile 4.6 Ford - Ok to use heavier oil?

When I was at a rural Sheriff's office we had about 15 4.6 powered Crown Vics that had the daylights driven out of them: cold starts followed by responding code, pursuits, idling for hours, you name it. They got 3k oil changes with 5W-20 Formula Shell at a local quick oil change. They never ran...

Converting heavy truck steer axle from grease to oil bath .. 18k Rockwell ~1992 vintage

Typically the grease seal for the hub will be the same regardless of the lube. However, it's really uncommon to pack bearings on that type of axle, even 1992. It could be the axle was submerged in water, the spindle is worn enough that it won't seal properly or the bearings were worn and the...

    Particular brand/type of grease

I have used Kendall SHP for years with excellent results. It's a calcium sulfonate product which is compatible with lithium and is extremely water resistant. It works well on boat trailer wheel bearings.

    Which oil analysis program?

I have used Horizon for years and been happy with the turn around times and the information. As far as cost, I have no idea...I know a guy who knows a guy...

Saw an 18 wheeler overheating today, he just kept going!!!

"Whether you drive a car or semi, if a problem does come up, common sense and being safe is a real positive." Common sense is no longer common, unfortunately. We live in an age where the operators manual tells you not to drink the coolant.

Saw an 18 wheeler overheating today, he just kept going!!!

Look at it this way: all fluid leaks eventually stop. So do really bad knocking noises. "Not my truck, not my problem". That's the sad state of too many drivers today.

Most reliable old man car: Grand Marquis or Buick Lucerne?

It's fascinating to see how these threads turn out. OP asks "A or B". It seldom takes more than two replies before someone jumps in with "pick C" basically answering a question that wasn't asked. To answer the OPs question the Ford platform is surprisingly reliable. I have no personal...

Any truth to this time limit oci are outdated?

I remember reading about this several years ago. The author of the article said that the mfr. was concerned about the integrity of the oil filter canister on cheap filters. After a year they had supposedly seen some of them start to rust. OTOH, I bought a Chevy DuraMax diesel from a woman whose...

    2000 Mack DM690S Schaeffer 15w40 9637mi/344hr

Re-read the post. It compares the engine hours in a construction application to the same number of hours on a highway tractor. The application is different but the run time on the engine is comparable.

    2000 Mack DM690S Schaeffer 15w40 9637mi/344hr

If you have 26,000 hours on the original engine it's time for an overhaul. When I ran Macks in a regional operation I found that the tractors averaged 42 mph. 26,000 x 42=1,092,000. So, your hours are the equivalent of a million miles on a highway tractor. I'd still check the source of the...

    2000 Mack DM690S Schaeffer 15w40 9637mi/344hr

Before you decide to overhaul it - assuming you have no starting or power issues - you could pull the oil pan and pressurize the radiator to see where the coolant is coming from. Oil coolers occasionally leak and they're a bunch cheaper than an overhaul.

What is the worst car you ever owned?

Worst cheap car: a $500 Corvair. It ate starters every two days. It turned out the starter mounted to the transmission and the bell housing was loose. The nose cone would break after about 10 engagements. Most unreliable second hand car: A Bronco II. It stranded me three times in about 18...

    Worst dipstick ever?

I had a Subaru Forester (I know...it seemed like a good idea at the time) that was impossible to check with any accuracy. Check it six times and I would get 6 different readings. I eventually just put the correct amount of oil in it and closed the hood.

Do you believe in that red battery anti corrosion spray?

I have had great success using felt rings under the terminals and spraying the terminals with Permatex High Tack gasket cement. Same red color but it doesn't stay sticky for years.

Diesel Flywheel Issue - Do I Need to Replace?

When the starter is engaged the drive simultaneously extends and rotates so it will slide into the flywheel teeth. Over time a weak engagement will munch the flywheel teeth. On a two piece flywheel you can heat the ring gear until it expands enough to rotate it so the damaged teeth aren't at the...

More than I'd like to see but it isn't showing up as engine wear...yet. The whole direct injection/fuel dilution issue is controversial. Is it a problem or an occurrence? For the record, Kendall 5W-20 (the recommended grade) has a published viscosity at 100 degrees of 8.8. The sample is 5W-30...

The point of UOA is to develop a history so that changes can be spotted. Looking at wear metals, exactly what would Mobil 1 improve (other than ExxonMobils' bottom line)?
