ARX in an occasional use vehicle

I have a '96 Jeep Cherokee with the 4 liter six, 129k on the odometer. As is typical for these engines, the rear main seal is starting to leak. I've hung around here long enough to know that ARX has a pretty good chance of fixing the problem - but if I follow the instructions it will take...

To all of the light pickup owners. Why did u choose your PSD, Cummins, or Duramax?

I bought my '93 Cummins powered Dodge for the Cummins and I have not been disappointed by either. It has 240k on it and currently puts 370 HP and 850 foot lbs. to the ground. Delvac 1300s goes in twice a year.

Burning used motor oil in an older diesel engine...?

I've been burning my waste oil in my '93 Cummins powered Dodge for about 6 months. Cummins says up to 5% by volume is OK, more will cause injector coking. This goes only for engines not equipped with a catalytic converter. I'm running it as free injector pump lube, so I run a gallon per 30...

    '93 Dodge Cummins Rotella T synth 5W-40

Why am I not seeing high amounts of fuel in the oil? The fuel section was marked "A" for acceptable, on the back of the sheet they say that means 0 - 3% fuel.

    '93 Dodge Cummins Rotella T synth 5W-40

What the lab said: I use this truck as my daily commuter (12 miles each way), and I can't plug in at work. In addition to the larger injectors, I've also done pump and turbo work that has the truck putting down 345 HP at the rear tires (stock was 160 HP at the crank). I think the relatively...

    '93 Dodge Cummins Rotella T synth 5W-40

It's been a while but I thought I'd drop by to get some comments. I was going to do yearly OCI but I installed some big ol' smoky injectors and I was afraid soot would get too high in a year. This oil was run for 6 months/7500 miles and had one quart of Pennzoil Long-Life 15W-40 added near the...

Thinking about adding Banks to my truck

Banks is not the best value for the HP gained. Do a Google on "ford diesel performance forum" and you should come across some guys who can steer you in the right direction.

    Glowing Pipe

It's not unusual for the exhaust to glow at night. When I've run small engines at night I've seen this. On my Dad's 8 HP B&S generator, the whole muffler is orange under load. As long as you can't see it glow in the daytime, don't sweat it. Like ZmOz said, it may be running lean. Is the mixture...

    Octane rating of diesel fuel?

I have a Tecumseh manual that covers dual fuel engines that start on gas and run on kerosene. The big difference (besides the carb) is that the dual fuel engine has a different cylinder head that lowers the compression ratio to 4:1 from 6:1. That's some low octane fuel if it can only stand 4:1...

Shifting Into 5th gear grinds at high rpms

Some clutches have some sort of centrifugal assist mechanism, usually weights on the release fingers. If the clutch is near the end of its life (I assume this is a hydraulic or self adjusting cable clutch), pedal pressure is not enough to overcome the weights at high RPM. Just a thought in case...

Delvac 1. Delvac 1300 Super is good enough at 1/4 the price, though.

How do oilless compressors last as long as they do?

My oilless compressor (Campbell-Hausfield) has sealed bearings on the crank and rod, and uses a rubber diaphragm on the piston. Stroke is about 1 inch. It was cheap, and since I only use it a couple times a month it should last quite a while while needing no maintenance other than draining the...

    Political Party

Seems I'm a Libertarian with Republican tendancies. If I had to describe my political views, I'd say that I'm a strict contitutionalist - if it's not in the constitution, the govt. shouldn't be doing it. I usually end up picking the least socialist of the candidates who have a chance to win. The...

    Turbo Temps

The truck I drive at work has a Cat 3216. The hottest I've seen it is 1,100 F (around 595 C). It only gets that hot if I let it bog down on a hill, downshifting to get the revs over 1,800 RPM will lower the temps to 950 F (510 C) or so. I emailed Cat to find out how hot it should get, they said...

    Type of Oil for Snowblower?

Tecumseh snow blower engines haven't had air filters in them for as long as I can remember. I guess they figure there's not much dust when it's snowing. It's really a smart design, the way they pull the intake air across the muffler to prevent carb icing.
