    Two-piece rear main seals

These were always on new engine assemblies on an engine stand in the shop. I don't ever remember replacing a rear seal in a boat. (I'm sure it can't really even be done. The engine would be pulled but we never replaced rear seals.) We added a slight film of grease to the surface that touches...

    Two-piece rear main seals

When I was young I worked in a marine engine machine shop. During the winter we built countless small block chevys for the Mercruiser warranty program. I was shown to offset the rear main seal slightly, like 5/16 of an inch. Add a slight dab of RTV to the ends and carefully assemble the main...

    Mounting a tire using fire

I have to do it to my snowblower tires just about annually. Starting fluid works best.

    Oldest tool you regularly use?

I have been buying tools since I'm 17 years old. I'm 59 now. The longest running, most regularly used tool that comes to mind is my 1/2" drive Snap On torque wrench. It's the flat one with the dial on the side. Early one so it has a two way head on it but it's only ever tightened. I taught...

Can I Restore Full Charge on Tool Battery

Yes. This is correct. I should have said not to do it with Lithium Ion batteries. It was something that NiCads needed for long life.

Can I Restore Full Charge on Tool Battery

The tool not running on the battery is not zero. You need a radio or a light or something to take it down further. I used to use the radio to run my old DeWalt NiCad batteries down to nothing. They lasted an insanely long time as well because I always discharged them to zero and then...

Can I Restore Full Charge on Tool Battery

My brother gave me a "Super Charger" or whatever Milwaukee calls the fast charger. I used it a few times to do 12 volt batteries for my heated hoodie. I noticed the battery didn't last very long when it was charged in that charger. I used the small regular charger and the batteries were back...

We have that exact same Sawzall at work. Someone cut a pipe with water in it and just put the tool away when they were done. Later on, someone went to use it and it was frozen. I disassembled it, cleaned, polished and greased up all the internals and it's back to working like a champ.

    Off shore tools?

For many years, all I bought was Snap On. I still have all my stuff but when I occasionally need something else I go straight to Icon. For years, I only had metric in 3/8 and 1/4 inch drive. My son and I needed 1/2" drive for his Ram pickup so right to HF to get Icon. The prices are so...

    Touring/commuter tires

How wide a tire can you fit? I just finished a new pavement bike for myself with 700c x 41mm Surly Extraterrestrials. I really like em. Folding bead and flat protection.

    Lovely aftermarket parts

Recently, my neighbor, who's an excellent carpenter but not a mechanic asked me to look at his Ram pickup. It was throwing an oil pressure code. It sounded fine so I surmised this sender on the front of the engine had failed. I had always had good luck with Autozone Duralast parts so I had...

    Natural Catch Tuna

I've had that tuna. Pretty good. Years ago, my dad and I got really good at catching tuna. I got so spoiled eating tuna fresh from the ocean that it was probably ten years before I could eat canned tuna again.

    guys over 50 doing maintenance

I'll be 59 next month. I do pretty much everything myself still and teach my youngest son. Next year, after he finishes college, I get to start restoring my 68 roadrunner. I actually bought a rotisserie so I can spend less time on the floor. The plan is, once the rotisserie type work is...

    Ear plug replacement

My dad on the other hand, almost never covered his ears, even when I offered up my spare muffs. His hearing is terrible. My brother and I used to be able to goof on him while he was in the room. Now he has hearing aids and can hear an ant fart. Gotta be careful what we say now.

    Ear plug replacement

I spent most of my life around diesel generators. For short runs, I always wear Peltor over ear muffs. If I'm going to work on a machine while one next to it is running, I always use a foam plug and the muffs. I'm 59 now and my hearing still checks out 100%. This angers my wife because she...
