    Ford/ Navistar 7.3L/7,800/71,800/Motorcraft 15W40

I don't think we should ever assume any spec on an oil. A TBN should be used to predict future possible use. The assumption that large amounts of calcium promises a high TBN is only an assumption. That remark shows inexperience in judgeing UOA results in my opinion. GregH

    Stihl 4-MIX?

The 4-mixes have mixture screws but they have limiters on them to preclude the user from makeing major changes. You can use the LS to get a smoother idle but the HS screw does little . This is true of all new engines as the EPA tries to get cleaner emissions. The makers do a great job with the...

    Stihl 4-MIX?

The 4-mix engines are great. They still use a 50:1 mix but operate on the 4 cycle principle. I had a 110 then just bought a KM130. These engines don't run as many rpm but have more torque. I have owned one since they first came out and continue to use one. Feel free to ask any particulars!! Greg...

    Mobil Racing 2T

I think I will try the Shindaiwa One synthetic oil. It also meet FC and EGD requirements. I would try the syn Stihl but it is unobtanium hereabouts in N. Ga. Greg

    Delo 400 "New formula"??

Why do you think the CI+4 was formulated with better basestocks. I don't think they would reduce oil quality, but I don't have proof. Could you provide a link to your info. I use Delo at this time, if the basestocks are poorer now, I might reconsider that use. Thanks in advance Greg Harrison

Thanks guys for the prompt info. I think some of you sit and wait for questions from dummies such as myself. Thank again Greg Harrison

    CAS number reference

Where do you guys get the info on the CAS numbers on the MSDS on oils. After finding that Valv uses group 1 in their HM oils, makes me want to be a little more observant on what I purchase. THanks in advance Greg Harrison

    ? about Vavoline Maxlife oil....

Sounds like the PAO is used as a correction fluid? The use of Group 1 does that oil in for me. Was gonna try it but now I think I will try the Castrol HM instead. Anyone know if they use Group 1's. Thanks Greg

    Schaeffer's #706 2-Cycle Oil

I should have know you would be in the know on the oil specs. Did not mean to be a smarta$$ but some folks would not have known the difference. Wonder why Lawnboy of all the makers spec TC-W3 for their air cooled stuff and the rest FC. Hmmmm, I learn something every day! Thanks for the info greg

    Schaeffer's #706 2-Cycle Oil

I could be wrong but the TC-W3 rating would make it NOT the preferred oil for chainsaws and the like where FC and TC ratings are specified. I am sure you can get buy with it but long term use may not be the best thing to do. Just my 2 cents adjusted for inflation! Greg Harrison

Need a replacement for German Castrol

njcruiser, You may post anytime you like certainly but your post did expose your ignorance. I don't use the oil but this oil has been tested to the nth. It has shown good UOA's in most everything, doesn't shear and is good for long oil change intervals. Noone said the best but it is excellent ...

    Varnish Article

I don't see the great 5k dino UOA's you seem to describe. I consider them somewhat adequate only. THe TBN is usually too low to give any cushion, at 1.0 is sludge forming, maybe, maybe not. Also the insols are at least .3 or .4. I see no safety margin. I would thing 4k is more appropriate for...

    Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20, 5200 mi., Mazda3 2.3L

Jeepman, look at the entire picture. At 5000 miles the TBN is still above 3. Most dino's are around 1.5. At least there is some cushion left. I don't think that syn oils reduce wear but they do provide a longer possible interval before needing to be changed. That is their only claim to fame in...

Castrol GTX - Is it Worthy?

With that large of an oil sump many dino oils would look that good! Greg Harrison

Pennzoil Platinum: best value for 95% of America

You guys must be seeing something I am not in saying 5K oil changes with Dino is okay. In some cases yes, others I don't think so. In most of the UOA's the insol's are about .4, the TBN is in the 1.5 range, etc. I don't see any comfort zone here with dinos. In my most unlearned optinion, I think...

The main thing I have learned on BITOG

I don't agree completely with the generic 5k mile change on just any oil and still get 200K miles on the engine, although I cannot prove it. Some 5k mile UOA's shows really low TBN and high insolubles so there might be some sludge forming that would block the oil screen and many many thousands...

    PP 5W30, 5K OCI, 60K, 2003 G35

In my opinion, which has little value, a TBN of 2.5 is rock bottom. The reason is, who knows how fast it will completely bottom out. You have gotten the good out of the oil. Don't be foolish and try to save a few more pennies. Change the stuff out! Greg Harrison

Best Bet in a non-synth oil for 5K changes

Thanks for the responses. It takes my wife about 6 weeks to rack up 5k miles. The Castrol did look awfully good against Havoline and the like. Perhaps a lot of us have overlooked it for some reason in the rush to find the best oil. The study was 2 years old but I would bet it is still fairly...

Best Bet in a non-synth oil for 5K changes

Talking about price, even at Walmarts there is a range of different prices for the same product. Yesterday I was the Havoline DS for 9.80 for 5 quarts, in my home town, Rome, Ga, it is 11.40. The MC oil looks like a really good deal. I am trying to decide probably between Havoline DS and the...

Best Bet in a non-synth oil for 5K changes

It is a 4 cyl for the fuel economy. I have no problem with Amsoil, just would prefer the easy purchase of mainstream oils. thanks for the replies! Greg Harrison
