    Snow Tire Questions

This is a great question. I got a seconhand set of Hercules Polar Trax about 3 years ago and just got to looknig at the date code, since they seem very hard, and I get a lot of ABS and more sliding than I think there should be. They're loud as [censored] on the highway ([censored] is very loud)...

    Goodrich Precept touring

They were on the car about 3 months after new, but I thought they were absolutely horribly slippery in snow. Nearly enough to want new tires. Not as bad as wide summers, but not even as good as the 90,000 mile worn Conquests that were taken off! They sure ride squishy though, enough to scare...

    This tire any good still?

Yesterday a friend of mine who's worked in a tire store for the past 6 years had a look at the outside of the tire. He said what some of you said: it does not look bad at all, he has seen worse do just fine, but an inspection of the inside would be needed. Also watch for any signs of a bubble...

    This tire any good still?

I went to the store. The person I talked to assured me that they had definitely inspected the tire for everything you've talked about here, that they wouldn't let something unsafe out the door for risk of failure. I won't get anywhere with that store now, really. I guess I'll have to take it...

Are these things discontinued? Canadian Tire doesn't seem to sell them anymore.

    This tire any good still?

The valve was replaced, so it was dismouted on at least one side. Probably only that one side. I dont know if it was inspected as she took it there herself. I expect they did have a look at it, but we didn't watch them do it. As soon as I can I'll go over there and ask them, but it's a big...

    This tire any good still?

Almost all of it is 15 minutes to work and back. I am really surprised they put that tire back on. Perhaps there is some life left in it and they didn't try to make a quick $100 sale? Weird, I might not have done that. That's a scuff from the ground. Didn't see the insided. When do you know...

    This tire any good still?

Recently the spouse got a flat (valve broke at the rim) and drove on this tire on the highway for a couple of minutes (really not a long time). When I looked at it it seemed weaker to the touch at the white line than nearer to the tread or nearer to the bead. Canadian Tire 'warranteed'...

Goodyear Allegra or BFG Traction T/A

Im looking at either of these in 195 70 14. BFG is 110 ea, Allegra is 85 ea with sale. Is there really any difference to consider? Im most concerned about city driving in winter (roads are plowed), tread life.

Checking Tire Pressure on a Sloped Driveway

Aaarg, why can't I edit... The tire construction looks really good for keeping a stable shape under internal pressure - but maybe not so good keeping that shape under vertical load, so one might think the volume in the tire isn't the same with the car on the ground compared to car on the hoist...

Checking Tire Pressure on a Sloped Driveway

I can't link them as jpg files, so renamed them txt files to fool geocities. It looks like this board won't link to a txt. However, I had the car on the ground, and saw 32psi. Lifted it on a hoist, and saw 33psi. Just to be sure I did it a couple of other times and on the rear axle too, and the...

I measured on a lift and off, and it was about a pound difference? More than I thought even.

Dot on new tire - heaviest or lightest point?

On some new tires Ive gone to put on a rim, there's a dot near the bead, does that indicate the heaviest or lightest part of the tire? Should it go opposite or lined up with the valve? (Im not a pro, but I can use the machine)

Toyo Proxes 4 or Yokohama TRZ

I bought Proxes 4 last June, and they were made in Japan. I would guess their newer lines are the ones made in China.

    Buying Tires ar Costco

Hey - they're closed but... Can you order tires online and just pick them up, without getting them mounted and balanced? I can do that my own in no time flat (no pun intended). The website says 'installation' and if balancing is only $5 each it's OK, but I am getting conflicting info from...
