Diesel Piston Ring and Liner Wear - Compare Oils

Wow, the discussion of this topic has changed a little in the last decade. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/179319/1

    Nozzle Flow Versus Pressure/Viscosity

Your (Shannow's) paper is from the same group as the two I linked. It always worries me when most of the work on a topic is coming from the same lab.

    Nozzle Flow Versus Pressure/Viscosity

The paper linked below may be of interest to some. The authors develop a model to estimate cooling rates from piston oil jets. I hadn't really thought about how uneven cooling can distort the "roundness" of the piston. https://www.researchgate.net/publication..._diesel_engines

    no oil changes on B&S

Several models have been without a drain for several years. I have a push mower that I flip onto a drain pan to change the oil. It is best done with little to no gas in the tank.

    no oil changes on B&S

I am beginning to see Briggs and Stratton Enginges that recommend that the oil never needs to be changed. They claim the engines are sealed better to keep contaminants out and that it runs cooler. This doesn't seem like a good idea to me...

Using ATF to clean out sludged engine?

Just for clarity, Spermaceti oil (whale oil) was collected from a large sound-focusing organ located in the front of head. This organ is not the brain. Most industrial uses of spermaceti were banned in 1972 in the Unites States. After it was banned, development of alternative products...

Result; 5 additives tested in a lab

It looks like it may be translated as "mineral of the snake". Perhaps it is mineral OIL of the snake.

Was the original Mobil 1 a Straight 20?

According to Mobil, it was first introduced in Europe in 1973 but was reformulated to make a "fuel saving 5W-20" that was introduced in the USA. https://mobiloil.com/en/article/why-the-...mobil-1-history

Moldy Mary's fruit was actually a cantaloupe instead of a grapefruit. The discover was important because it was the first example of a Penicillium that could be grown in suspension culture.

1.8 Turbo with T6 seeing Silver in UOA

Without caged bearings or solder joints, I'm at a loss.

1.8 Turbo with T6 seeing Silver in UOA

There's not a lot of silver in car engines (including bearings), partially because it very sensitive to zinc in the oil. On the other hand, heat exchange units (radiators) can have a lot of silver in the solder. Do you have an after market oil cooler or some other soldered component?

    I would gladly exchange triple-the-wear for triple-the-mileage.

Bought my first jug of 0w-20 and wow is it thin!

@ The_Eric: I think that you are conflating pour point depressants with viscosity index improvers. PPDs reduce crystallization upon cooling. VII unfold with heat to reduce thinning as the oil is heated. However, VII also fold with cooling to accelerate thinning upon cooling.

    Corrosion protection in brake fluid

The copper test will tell you about whether the fluid needs to be replaced due to exhaustion of oxidation inhibitors. Glycol ethers are corrosive to copper. In a sense, the copper tests are reporting on a history of heat and oxygen. Moisture contamination is also a problem that can involve...
