Newer 0w20 PCMOs dropping Dexos 1 Gen 3 approvals

The last ones I purchased (I’m trying to remember the production dates, probably late 2025) still have it as well. But no mention whatsoever of dexos on the latest data sheets on the Pennzoil websites. https://www.shell-livedocs.com/data/published/en-US/70f245ee-61c7-42e8-860a-d8e11898a9f0.pdf

I’ve actually never owned a GM product in my life so I don’t have a manual handy but I see what you’re saying, ‘recommended’ vs ‘required’ or what have you. I’m just a guy looking for a good quality oil for his Asian vehicles, without having to spend a bundle on Amsoil, Motul, Liqui Moly or...

Would you mind elaborating on this? You mean GM doesn’t require dexos approval for warranty purposes? No sarcasm intended, just curious.

I get your point but it just seems like sort of an apples vs grapefruit type of comparison… boutique oils seem like more of a niche market/lower volume, etc. Folks who are going for those oils are already convinced of their superiority, or else they wouldn’t pay their extravagant prices, no...

I guess that’s a possibility too. I always kinda figured that if GM engines can run good on Dexos oil, then just about anything else should be able to as well LOL. No offense to anyone who has a good GM engine from days gone by.

That’s an idea. I just bought a jug of Castrol Edge Extended Performance that I believe has some Euro approvals as well (ACEA C5,C6 and Mercedes 229.71.) If I like that one, maybe I will use it again (assuming I can keep getting it at a reasonable cost.) Not trying to do extended drain...

Newer 0w20 PCMOs dropping Dexos 1 Gen 3 approvals

That makes sense. I guess I was just wanting assurance that these oils I have used previously in my NA GDI (Mazda) and my wife’s turbo GDI (Honda) engines are still up to the task. I don’t own any GM products, for the record. I’ve used mostly Shell (Quaker and Pennzoil) in them thus far...

Newer 0w20 PCMOs dropping Dexos 1 Gen 3 approvals

This is kind of what I was concerned about when hearing of these kind of changes. Like what is the motivation to meet/exceed certain specs, if the label no longer says that you do? I get that certain oils may still be just as good as they were previously, but what is our assurance as consumers?

Newer 0w20 PCMOs dropping Dexos 1 Gen 3 approvals

Makes sense. I just found it odd that they suddenly wanted to jump off that bandwagon, when even Supertech 0w20 carries the Dexos 1 Gen 3 approval. I guess that is apples and oranges though.

Maybe I worded that poorly. Just thinking that Dexos 1 Gen3 performance standards are generally exceeding the top API and ILSAC standards, is what I was trying to say. Just struck me as odd that these oils that seeked out/payed $ for these approvals for years, would suddenly opt out.

Newer 0w20 PCMOs dropping Dexos 1 Gen 3 approvals

It seems that some of the 0w20 oils that have had Dexos approval for years now may no longer be approved. The latest and greatest data sheets on Quaker State Full Synthetic and Pennzoil Platinum (at least in the 0w20), indicate they will no longer be Dexos 1 Gen 3 approved. I contacted Shell...
