    Live Platinum Security Virus

For clarity, I was using IE when the virus hit from an infected ad on the local newspaper website. I installed Chrome after I got everything cleaned up and may try FF. The searching I have done also seems to back up that this particular nasty was a hostage taker and didn't steal anything...

    Live Platinum Security Virus

I finally get my computer running much better, with help from this forum, and this virus gets past my security and completely hoses everything up. It even took down our local newpaper's website (which is likely where I got it). Well... after almost 3 days of continuous scanning by 3 different...

Boot up and general speed tweaks?

Just a quick follow-up. I began using CCleaner a while ago and LOVE IT. Started with default settings and slowly started tweaking from there (deeper cleans, disable start ups, etc). I even downloaded/used their defrag and did a free space wipe and it's been much better. I also bought a 1 TB...

Boot up and general speed tweaks?

Thanks for the follow-up info. I will try CCleaner and other suggestions on my desktop and go on to the kid's laptops when I'm confident I've made thing better... not worse.

Boot up and general speed tweaks?

XP desktop has 2 GB ram and 7 laptops have 4 GB ram each. I know this is minimum for each OS and I'm probably going to up that soon... and should have done it before. I do run disk cleanup and defrag fairly regularly and have anti-virus/spyware running. I will try the other suggestions, but...

Boot up and general speed tweaks?

Office max is offering 20% off their $40 service to speed/clean up computers. This involves removing OEM add ons that aren't used, like free trials and such, as well as approximately 60 OS tweaks. The guy's claim is that this will help speed up boot/shutdown and overall speed and reliability...

    MMO for winter storage

I have used MMO as a regular additive to OPE gas and as a storage stabilizer for 10 years and have never had a problem. Everything fires right up and looks pretty clean inside. I don't use any other additives with it, just the recommended dose of MMO

Engine idle problem (2000 Doge Gr Caravan)

Not familiar with your engine set-up, but I had an idling problem with the 3.1L Beretta. It would surge between normal and rough idle. I thought it was the IAC or coolant temp sensor, but it turned out to be a leaking fuel pressure regulator. Replaced and all is well.

New upsize wheels from Tirerack... trust fitment?

New upsize wheels from Tirerack... trust fitment?

I am looking at 17" wheels and the recommended 205/45/17 size tires from Tirerack for my son's '07 Saturn Ion QC. OEM wheels/tires are 15" 195/60/15. Should I have any concerns about fitment... partcularly rubbing of any sort. I have never upsized and while I know Tirerack is reputable and they...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

WHITMAN, Mass. -- Sean Bowman was driving with a classmate to community college when his Ford Windstar's rear axle cracked in half, sending the minivan careening into a building and killing him, his family says. One week later, the family says, a safety recall notice from Ford arrived in the...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

Heard it on a radio news break this morning. The crash was from 2 months ago. I think they said in eastern US (Pennsylvania possibly), but I wasn't listening that close. I thought it was funny that whatever news org. giving the top of the hour update said that they "had just learned about a...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

Last week (6+ weeks in) we went to the dealer to sign paperwork and sign the title over to Ford in a 10-15 minute process. We were told that due to the overwhelming response, it would be approximately 2 weeks before everything was processed and we actually recieve the check. At that time we will...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

Last Friday (3 days shy of 5 weeks), we received the offer package via FedEx (for signature and date verification). It is a 2 page document stating the buy back offer ($ amount) and instructions. You have to check the 'ACCEPT' box, sign & date, write down current mileage, then mail back with...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

It has now been 4+ weeks and nothing. I did drive through the "back lot" yesterday, to make sure no vandalism has been done to my van, and there are 30 Windstars lined up. No way of knowing how many are buy-back and how many are waiting to get the axle replacement. The rental company has to be...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

Update today... there is none! What was supposed to take 3-5 days has become 3 weeks and a day. Ford keeps saying that it should be any day now, but has been saying that every Monday when called. I think they are finding more "failed" axles during inspection than anticipated and the buy-back...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

The cracks/perforations and corrosion will eventually lead to failure... Google it or YouTube to see what a complete failure looks like. Not pretty so it's better to be safe than sorry. Unless an axle design is similar to the this, there shouldn't be a problem. This design allows the corrosive...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

Don't hesitate on taking it in for an inspection. When I looked at mine, I thought it seemed fine... normal scaling and corrosion. But when they ground off the crud, there were the perforations. Not safe, and to think we went a few hundred miles on our annual apple orchard trip fully loaded a...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

I should add to the current condition of the van. Just before the recall notice came I determined it was time for new brakes, front and rear. This sweetens the pot by a couple hundred dollars plus my labor. Also, our van has the typical electrical gremlins that are annoying but don't affect...

Windstar axle recall... my results and experience.

I'll attempt to answer the questions above. -Deadlined is a vehicle inspection term meaning undrivable. -We are taking the offer, it's a no brainer. Ford is offering $3435, which is high book on a '99 SEL with 144k. I figure we would get at least 1k less if sold or traded. It's in good...
