At what mileage did you start adding a heavier weight oil to your vehicle(s)?

I made a typo. It’s 0w-20 in the winter, and 5w-30 in the summer. :) It doesn’t get colder than freezing where I live. Even if I ran 5w-30 in the winter, at 32F, 5w-30 is 70 centistokes. At a frigid 5 degrees F on a Chicago cold start, 0w-16 is 400 centistokes. You don’t see Chicago cars...

At what mileage did you start adding a heavier weight oil to your vehicle(s)?

Right away, baby. :). 0w-20 in the summer. 5w-30 in the winter for Toyota hybrid specifying 0w-16. In California, I have not seen any change in fuel consumption when running the thicker oil. For this Atkinson cycle 4-banger, 0w-16 is probably adequate but I don’t know why anyone would run...

Valvoline Restore and Protect - Shortage at Walmart?

I noticed that the new label (marked ILSAC GF-7) is accompanied by a bump up in price. But Valvoline Restore and Protect is stocked on Amazon with free delivery. Load up baby.

Why New Oil Filters Are Being Designed for High-Cleaning Oils

Creating a product for a problem that doesn’t exist. Just change the filter frequently.

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

One concrete example would be premature death from fuel dilution in some poor cold weather dude driving short trip intervals. This is partly behavior, partly engine design, but is partly remedied with frequent oil change. Small displacement turbo-charged engines should get frequent oil...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

Nobody has ever had premature car death from changing his oil a little earlier. But there are plenty of documented car deaths on people who were very good about changing oil at 7k intervals. Whether it was infrequency of oil changes or a car design flaw… the only thing you lose from earlier...

    New Mobil 1 Advanced Clean

I don’t have any qualms with using older oil. The first thing that comes out of suspension are the anti-foam additives. Just give your bottle a good vigorous shake. My stash is usually 2 to 4 years worth of oil. If I run lower than 1 year, I get a little nervous. LOL.

    Castrol vs Valvoline

These are my two oils. I swap back and forth on Castrol EDGE Extended Performance and Valvoline Restore and Protect. Usually 3 oil changes each before a swap.

    90915-YZZN1 Failure/C&P

Not catastrophic but a reason to change your oil/filter frequently. It’s a failure to expect based on the design and I wondered why it didn’t happen regularly. It’s basically a chronic bypass. This probably happens frequently but isn’t documented as most folks don’t open their used spin on...

New Carquest EP 20k Filter C&P

I never used the 3/4 extra turn method. I twist all my filters down “hand tight”. As tight as my weakened trigger-finger afflicted right hand can twist. Never had a problem. If I were doing multiple OCI’s on the same filter, I’d want the Carquest EP. The Vietnam-made Carquest Premium filter...

Best Oil Filters - short & skinny of it??

LOL. Because of the bypass valve integrated into the leaf spring. This is definitely a "leaky" mechanism, and that is apart from the very porous media. The filters are clearly built for cost-effectiveness. There must be something to the porosity of the media that Toyota is spec'ing for its...

Best Oil Filters - short & skinny of it??

I wish all filters were just a canister plug-in like my Mercedes so that I didn’t have to worry about the bypass valve mechanism and just had to worry about the media and firm fit. For my most common spin-on use (Toyota), I’ve taken apart a dozen filters in the past year with great attention...

    Virgin Beck Arnley 041-8066 (VIC C-110) C&P - Toyota 90915-YZZN1 equivalent

You’re probably right. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a documented Toyota A25A engine failure from using a more efficient filter in the setting of frequent oil and filter changes.

Royalty Auto Service Cuts Open 9 Oil Filters from Different Brands

Because of that honking anti siphon valve or nose in the middle, it’s probably easier to cut at the cap. Royalty Auto has a big viewership. I applaud them for showing the oil filter business consolidation issue to those who may not have been aware.

    What is Fram/Champ saying?

Just need to talk with your dollars and post information on social media. Too bad no one here has a million followers. One post and something would happen.

Purolator One, recommended mileage, 10,000 or 15,000 miles?

LOL. If I see a super-high quality filter, I tend to stock up since tomorrow’s filter can be the victim of cost controls. I have no problems holding onto 4 or 5 years supply. I live in dry So Cal and my oil filters are stored indoors. The Carquest EP c&p has me itching to buy a dozen or two.

    Virgin Beck Arnley 041-8066 (VIC C-110) C&P - Toyota 90915-YZZN1 equivalent

This is the filter Toyota should have adopted as the OE filter. Now that I’ve seen the thread of the missing glue end on numerous Denso N1 filters made in Thailand, this Beck/Arnley (made in Japan) filter is the best constructed alternative option filter if I’m looking for similar OE filtering...

New Carquest EP 20k Filter C&P

This is different from Amsoil, Royal Purple, FRAM Synthetic Endurance. Wire backing is different as is the bypass valve design with lack of a leaky leaflet. The design looks stout and I will happily purchase these.

Supertech and other value point oils

I think this is a valid concern. My current regimen is Castrol EDGE Extended Performance changed every 4K to 5K miles which I think has the best high temperature protection among all EP oils. Valvoline Restore and Protect every fourth change. On my Mercedes, it’s a quart of HPL Engine Cleaner...
