Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

I agree. Many keyboard naysayers on this site. I’ve been a member for over 20+ years and the ol saying about opinions is so true. Everyone’s got one. At least there are professional triboligists who can actually apply chemical science to this to make a better informed decision than what...

New Mobil 1 Advanced Clean vs. Valvoline Restore and Protect

Good point and that’s my impression as well. In my applications, Valvoline Restore and Protect has been phenomenal in results on wear ppm/1k … reducing oil burn… cleaned up varnish internally… and quiet running engines and still at $29 per jug. All measurable data points. If I was Mobil, I...

New Mobil 1 Advanced Clean vs. Valvoline Restore and Protect

With that said, which actually sounds like the talking points from Valvoline Restore and Protect team, what is your determining factors that would make you pick one or the other if you want very clean engine and will only go 5k-7k OCI’s? Price? Additive Pkg advantage? UOA comparisons...

    2017 Audi Q7 3.0T - Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30, 2k mi

Totally with you on this Knapp…. Too many folks on this website who stress their opinion vs thinking outside their comfort zone. If you have the data and the science that shows good results over the stereotypical’ Euro oils (the ones that got that car in the condition it’s in!)… then stick with...

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20, 6,500 miles on oil, 142,000 miles on vehicle 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L EcoBoost - used oil analysis

Location is northern Indiana. Had a few weeks of below 0° for the day lows. I’m now back on 5w now I’ve been that ‘backyard chemist’ for over 10 years. The data I have on my ‘08 Honda and other vehicles I’ve ‘mixed’ with has shown nothing but Excellent UOA all below 1.0 ppm / 1k miles. When...

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20, 6,500 miles on oil, 142,000 miles on vehicle 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L EcoBoost - used oil analysis

Used oil analysis of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. It’s a mix of 0w-20 and 0w-40. 0w-Winter mix but wanted something with a little more viscosity than straight 0w-20. CarQuest Extended Performance 20k Oil Filter. 70%-30% Highway miles. Just wanted a comparison to Valvoline Restore and Protect...

Mobil 1 Advanced Clean 5W-30 VOA

Does that mean less is more … as in more ‘wear’? Lol

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20, 4,000 mi., 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L, 135,000 mi.

I do have access within my Ford Pass App that shows the service done on it because they took it to Ford dealerships in Michigan and Illinois for their service schedules. They had it going for basic oil service and filter changes on a 10,000 mile intervals. Only problem it’s had was engine...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20, 4,000 mi., 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L, 135,000 mi.

You’re basically spot on about my viscosity choices. It’s essentially a long term experiment. Both my Honda Accord and Ford Escape call for 5w-20. My past used oil analysis seem to come out slightly better (marginally so) if I mix up a thick 20w oil relative to the viscosity range of 20w oil...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20, 4,000 mi., 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L, 135,000 mi.

Well actually, Lake states it’s the tin in the Moly additive that Valvoline uses. Which seems a bit contradictory if it’s not showing up in VOA. ???

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20, 4,000 mi., 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L, 135,000 mi.

Gradually going to do that!!! What I haven’t mentioned as of yet is I’m now running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with that CarQuest EP filter. 0w-20 and 0w-40 mix. I wanted 0w for the winter time. I was tempted to go with AMSOIL Signature Series 0w30 but chose Pennzoil Ultra Platinum instead...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20, 4,000 mi., 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L, 135,000 mi.

Thanks. I was pleasantly surprised of the low wear rate. This next run I’m extending the oil change interval and running a CarQuest Extended Performance premium oil filter. Doing a bit of comparison with this filter and the MicroGard Select and where my particle count numbers shake out.

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20, 4,000 mi., 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L, 135,000 mi.

Newly purchased used vehicle with 131,000 miles. Immediately changed oil with Valvoline Restore and Protect. Former fleet vehicle from my son-n-law’s company. Added new air filter and MicroGard Select oil filter. Have since changed the transmission fluid and radiator coolant fluid. Just...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20 7k mi - 08 Honda Accord, 365k mi

Thanks Mantooth. Sorry to hear of the bad luck you experienced on your 08 Honda. Mine has been worry free. Replaced timing chain, guides, and tensioner at 220k. Power steering pump and that’s the extent of my heartache. Been very reliable. Gonna keep it past 425,000 miles then trade it...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20 7k mi OCI 08 Honda Accord 352k mi

Not since 220,000 mile mark. Replaced timing chain and tensioners. Otherwise, nothing done to the engine. Transmission is also original and has had Zero work done to it other than fluid changes.

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20 7k mi - 08 Honda Accord, 365k mi

Valvoline Restore and Protect trending solidly at the 1.0 ppm wear metals per 1,000 Miles. Silicon was up a touch as I had local Mechanic repair a small oil leak around oil pressure switch. Fuel dilution is same as previous sample. A pinch higher than what it’s been in the past so I might...
