    Holy Moly again..

I was just wondering: 1) Is there a limit to how much moly should be in the initial fill of an engine to allow enough cross-hatching scuffs to occur? 2)Too high of a moly content in an oil equals to a clogged oil filter? 3)What's the moly count for a virigin Chevron Supreme 5w30? This may...

    Should I change my oil

I would change oil out by maximum of 4000 after trips with long sustained high rpm speeds.

    OEM vs. after market

To me one of the most important oem parts is actually the OEM coolant/antifreeze. I would not use any thing else besides this for my radiator. Another important oem parts are the sensors like cousincletus mentioned.
  4. Q

    OEM vs. after market

It usually depend on the parts for most people on a particular vehicle. For me i'd use oem parts for the radiator, starter, alternator, tranny parts & fluid, power steering parts & fluid, brake fluids, A/C & heater components, critical engine parts overall, etc. For aftermarket parts, i'd use...

    Oil rec. for '96 Camry

GC/castrol syntec 0w30 or mobil 1 5w30. Synthetics should be your choice if you prefer better protection during startup and while driving all year round.

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

Any engines that live up to at least 250k miles with no major engine/tranny malfunction is pretty impressive in my book. I would love to examine the design and the maintenance of that vehicle. Ok.. here's another take.. i believe all engines should use the thinnest oil that is specified in...

Mobil 1 for my Diamond in the Rough

If you do alot of high rpm driving, stop and go, mostly street driving, etc. go with 5W30 if your manual states it. If not go with 5w20 if manual permits it to do so. 5w20=better mpg. I wouldn't ever mix, just stick to one for what it's worth.

    is synthetic really better

Michaelc80, you're absolutely right on factory filled synthetics on those BMW, PORSHCE,Corvette, etc cars. I tend to follow upon traditional practices with break-in fills. There's absolutely no harm done if one is to switch to synthetic early (like your 500 miles), but it can take 'longer' for...

    Mobil 1 5w-30 Shortage

-GarrettSocling I'd just check the date on the bottle if they even post dates on theirs. I'd should of checked the date on those SM/GF-4 m1's i saw at sears (inside of the mall). But as long as i can get these with the starbursts and donuts, im alll goooooood.

    Synthetic to Dino?

auto-rx swells the seals, i dont know if this is a good thing or not. apparently not of 'yet'

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

Well, if you want it to put it that way. i think driver's driving style and proper OCI (if abusing it or taking care of it) will count for nearly 80% of the engine's life. The other 20% would come from the reliability of the vehicle's design. Selecting just a particular grade of oil or oil...

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

Another issue may come to mind is how many miles (be it 150k, 200k, 300k, 400k, etc etc)would it take to determine that an engine has lasted a very long time? I think the greatest engineering feat for the future is when a vehicle is engineered to guranteed to last over a century. Although i...

    is synthetic really better

Glennc- That's what i have implied in my earlier statements: "Again, if a car is well-maintained (meaning proper oil, filter, oci's, regular maintenance check, etc.) you can switch to synthetic anytime." Alot of car owners nowadays own high mileage second-hand vehicles with no knowledge of past...

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

In general, could this all point to the design of the vehicle? There are drivers who cared less about startup, correct viscosity of oil, maintenance, etc. that ended with a longer lasting vehicle than another one of the same year but different make/model. If one was to compare similar...

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

Also, there are some valid evidence that certain oil/oilfilter/OCI/particular driving styles may vary and benefit with a particular vehicle, but all of this also depends on some shear luck & knowledge to make an engine last for over the 200k miles hump. Sorry, i felt like i just stayed at the...

My own final 2 cents: MORE MPG AND HP IS BETTER!! GO WITH THINNER, BUT SPECIFIED WEIGHT OILS!! DO MINIMUM OCI'S TO PREVENT ANY MISHAPS. =)

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

I just hope that competitions from oil and auto manufacturing companies and goverment regulations keep up and stay together to allow technological advancements; therefore, allowing us(the consumers)to worry less about the longevitiy and reliabilty of our vehicles.

I’m Tired of Everybody Saying UOA Matters and Filtration Counts

I believe there tends to be no good correlation between what is a proper oil/filter/OCI for any vehicle and for any driving style because there is a thing called placebo effect and also due to open/wild/poor judgment calls by the consumers/drivers. UOA's may give some beneficial information for...
