    Why change your own oil?

I think except for the first couple drains I don't think there is a huge benefit to draining. It is mostly about removing early manufacturing debris that may be left over You must be saving a fortune on the Mercedes oil changes. I've heard dealer changes are very expensive on those vehicles.

    Why change your own oil?

Do you ever drain, and do you change the filter every time? I think draining at least for the first few oil changes will help ensure any metals that have settled in the pan are flushed out. My 2002 ford explorer had curly metal shavings come out of the pan on one of the early oil changes...

Pennzoil Question from a 1987 experience

With modern fully synthetic sludge is a thing of the past. I remember running Quaker State in a mustang with a 302 and the oil breather cap would develop some thick waxy like substance. My view is Penzoil full syn is a great oil and a better value than Mobil 1.

OG Wire Backed Fram Ultra XG7317 73,000 miles

I'm shocked the material didn't disintegrate. I wonder if this filter was running bypass valve for many of those miles?

    Why change your own oil?

Even though I know the filter will last for much longer than oil drain interval, I just can't bring myself to change the oil without also changing the filter That little bit of extra dirty oil bothers me even though in reality it probably doesn't make any difference in the longevity of the...

    Techron, Top Tier, Oil Changes

I'm sure at some concentration you could replicate it. If you are doing it on every refill, then a few oz may be the answer. Alternatively, you could do a full bottle every so many fill ups. Like ever 1500 miles or so. From what I have read the carbon buildup does happen pretty fast if you...

    Why change your own oil?

Can you explain how this would help? In big cities there is the drain issue - where to drain. And there is also disposal issues - where can it be recycled.

86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

This article show the benefits of top tier gasoline. Unfortunately it didn't mention which engine and whether it is a direct injection. It seems the benefits are worth it. What are the mitigations for direct injection engines...

Traveling and can't always fill up with Top Tier Fuel

BTW I just did the math and using Premium (93 octane) Top Tier costs around $10 more per tank than 87 at the same pump. Really makes you think about whether or not it's worth it if 87 octane will do.

Traveling and can't always fill up with Top Tier Fuel

For me I think I would just carry some Techron with me and add some every few tanks to compensate. I have direct injection so more concerned about keeping injectors clean.

Traveling and can't always fill up with Top Tier Fuel

I also learned from the marketing info that Top Tier cleans the deposits over the course of a few tanks of gas. Like breaking a diet during the holidays, get back on plan and all will get back to normal :)

86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

Top tier claims that it improves fuel economy, prevents carbon deposits from building up and cleans deposits after a few tanks of gasoline. My interpretation of that is the fuel is burning cleaner. Carbon build-up in the combustion chamber is prevented and therefore cleaner burn over time. Edit...

Traveling and can't always fill up with Top Tier Fuel

Shell claims their Premium grade of gas is not only Top Tier, but it also has additives that help with lubrication. Supposedly proven through oil analysis, less wear metals in the oil when using Shell Premium grade.

    Rislone 4732 Fuel Injector Cleaner

Use up quickly can be done if you use the recommended amount (or less to be safe) on every fill up.

86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

My owner's manual says to never use less than 87 on my motor. Pick a higher grade until the octane is 87 or higher. I've been in winter high elevation locations where they had 85 octane and had to get premium grade just to get the Octane I wanted.

86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

Clean injectors mean cleaner combustion. I think that's the correlation. Poor combustion contributes to carbon build up, doesn't it?

    Techron, Top Tier, Oil Changes

Chevron is my favorite Top Tier gas brand. I learned that in the 90's when I was measuring gas mileage and with Chevron Vs Shell I was getting 1-2 miles per gallon better with Chevron. Switched after 10 years of only using Shell. This pre-dates Top Tier so now there are many brands to choose...

86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

According to my understanding Top Tier burns cleaner, thus less carbon to collect. It doesn't prevent carbon build up; it just slows down the accumulation of the build-up. The issue with direct injection is if the valves do get carbon build up on the backside of the valve to the point of it...

86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

Not OP but they mentioned they were in Lubbock, TX so I just checked. If you stop at Philips, Valero, Conoco or Costco you will get Top Tier. Edit: Also Sinclair.
