Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

The difficult part here in Australia is so few brands/weights of oils are avalible readily off the shelf. Penrite and Castrol are the big main players, there's a bit of Shell, Mobil, Nulon and Gulf Western here and there but anything else is typically only avalible from specialist stores or...

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

The Ravenol is quite expensive here and in that thread I was trying to weigh up if it was worth the extra cost for my other car which has lower miles than the M3 and no known main bearing issues (although the rod bearing issue still exists). However in this case, if there's any oil that can act...

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

The Ravenol does look pretty fantastic on paper for sure. I wish we had the Shell Helix as it also looks brilliant. I mean you can get it here, but only in a 209L drum lol. No idea why they don't sell it in smaller quantities.

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

They do, although I've never considered Nulon to be a premium brand, their products are more targeted at budget concious people. Their 10w60 looks like more of a racing product too, less suited for road use.

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

I take good care of the oil in these respects, always baby the car until at temp and don't track it at all. Brand obviously doesn't matter, just hoping to ascertain if a certain additive package (like ZDDP and boron in the Penrtie) will be better for wear prevention.

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

Good to hear! I think some well maintained examples and those with a favourable 'tolerance stack' from factory will last forever. So many variables though. My S65 bearings looked pretty awful at 170,000km so glad I changed them.

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

Looks like the Motul is a decent choice, thanks for that. Main bearings are certainly less common but they seem to be becoming more of a thing as these engines clock up higher mileage. It's usuallly always the upper no.1 main, there's a theory the 4 chains are putting a lot of upwards force on...

Best 10W60 for bearing wear protection?

I just replaced my rod bearings on my 09 BMW M3, however am aware main bearings on these engines can also (occasionally, but less frequently) have trouble. Because of this, I want to use a 10W60 that offers the best additive package for bearing wear prevention until such a point I can get around...

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

This seems like a peculiar one off case by which something has been mislabelled or incorrectly bottled by a distributor or similar. I highly doubt it's a common occurrence. Ravenol are a big company, they sponsor the N24, it's not just a couple of dudes bottling oil in their shed.

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

I don't believe a 5w60 even exists since the viscosity gap between hot and cold is too great? Would love to be proven wrong though. As the prior person said, I'm not sure there's a huge benefit to running a 5W opposed to a 10W unless you live somewhere where the ambient temps drop well below...

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

The Penrite 10tenths 10W60 is one of only two oils in that weight you can easily obtain at Supercheap, Repco, etc - the other being Castrol. I once asked on another forum about the comparison between the Castrol and Penrite and supposedly the specs on the Castrol looked better. I don't doubt the...

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

A bit off topic, but I saw a while back that Motul have a new 300V 10W60 that they brand as 'Le Mans', which caught my attention. Since 300V is a racing product I guess it's not really suitable for road use, but looks like a quality product. Perhaps still not as impressive numbers wise as the...

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

I've never seen it in shops here but can probably get it online I'd imagine. The only three that are easily obtainable for me are Castrol, Ravenol or Penrite.

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

Yeah that is a little concerning. You'd hope these were edge cases and not an indicator of a broader issue. I don't doubt that the larger oil companies have some differences from batch to batch as well.

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

This is another oil on my radar. Can't get it at shops locally but can purchase it interstate for a fairly reasonable price, probably still a bit cheaper than the Ravenol. Not sure if it's much better or fairly on par, perhaps someone who understands the different technical metrics better than I...

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

For my BMW M6 with the S85 V10, I was previously using the Castrol Edge 10w60 Supercar oil which I believe is what the engine came filled with from the factory. The Castrol oil is one of only two 10w60's that are readily avaliable from local shops where I live, the other being a local Australian...

BMW LL04 and LL12FE in Australia with high sulphur content in fuel?

My mechanic gets his oil through Imparts, as they are the only Australian importers of Ravenol. A lot of local European specialists are now using this oil. I have to wonder if they are aware that the LL04 oils are not supposed to be used in petrol models in our market, or if Imparts has tricked...

BMW LL04 and LL12FE in Australia with high sulphur content in fuel?

Yeah, for this one 95 is probably the way to go. I still like to use 98 for my BMW M6 (S85 V10 which revs to just shy of 9k RPM), but even that's supposed to be fine on 95 according to the owners manual. Hopefully with the revised standards being introduced in late 2025 they will legislate the...

BMW LL04 and LL12FE in Australia with high sulphur content in fuel?

Thanks to everyone for all of the replies here, some very valuable info. Sorry I haven't had the chance to reply to people individually. Glad that it has been discovered that there are no GPF's in Australia as I was unsure on that. I recently took the car to my local BMW specialist who services...

BMW LL04 and LL12FE in Australia with high sulphur content in fuel?

Thanks. Do you think any negatives could come from using LL01 when it's not listed as an approved spec in the owners manual? I hear it can be bad for petrol particulate filters and 3-way cat systems but I am unsure if the Australian market version of the car came with those (I assume not). I...
