Wayne: the engine seized prematurely at 100K-clogged oil passages. I did not have a tear-down done but it had to be the PTFE in the filter. These engines do not just crap out like that, and it got regular 3K oil changes and was well-maintained.

I have used Pennzoil HM with very good results in two vehicles: 90 Camry (5W-30) and 92 Transport (10w-30 and 40). In addition, Bar's makes a Stop Leak product for engine oil that I have used with great success in the Transport.

acewiza, there is enough PTFE in the Doublegard filter to do real damage. I used one for one OCI on a 93 Accord. Aside from this one slip-up, the car was meticulously maintained (3,000 mi. intervals). At 100,000 miles (2 or 3 OCI's later) the engine croaked. Clogged oil passages.

Can't answer your question, but thought I would pass this along. I have had great success with Bar's Stop Leak in a 92 GM 3800 V6 motor with a rear main seal leak. Maybe worth a try before you resort to the major repair.

I am a believer in Pennzoil HM oils. Have used them successfully in two older cars to cure minor oil leaks and blue smoke from exhaust.

After about 3 weeks I am very impressed with Bar Stop Leak. Leaks have slowed considerably and no longer produce smoke from under the hood after the engine has run a bit. Happy camper with this, so far.

I have had excellent results with Bar Products Stop Leak and Conditioner on a 93 GM 3800 engine with several moderate leaks (138K mi.).

vet, I've had very good success with Pennzoil HM oil, 10W-30, in a 90 Camry 4 cyl. That said, I am trying the Bar's additive in a 12 year-old GM 3800 V6 with multiple leaks. Too soon to know for sure but seems to be helping.

Thanks for the info, guys. I plan to stay with 5W-20 for the warranty period, either dino for 5,000 mi OCI or syn for 10,000 mi. OCI. Leaning toward the syn. Then will probably go 5W-30 after warranty.

As we know, the 2005 Honda Accord 2.4L owners' manual for the U.S. specs 5W-20, with no mention of other acceptable grades/viscosities. I am curious about the spec for this very same engine in 2005 Accords sold in foreign countries. Please respond if you have solid documentation in this regard...

vstrom, the information is correct. 2005 Honda Accord 4-cyl. manual specifies 10K normal OCI and 20K for the filter. Severe service is 5K and 10K respectively. These extended intervals help Honda re: its "affordability" indices vs. other manufacturers. Think I'll follow the severe schedule

I also have a new Accord with the 2.4 engine and about 800 miles. Oil level is just a tad low, but I've noticed a few small drops of oil on the garage floor. Haven't had a chance to run it over to the dealer yet. I've tried to vary my driving, with a good mix of highway but mostly city miles...

My experience with Pennzoil HM in a 90 Toyota Camry is similar. Eliminated the blue smoke out the exhaust on start-up, and cut consumption dramatically. The stuff works.

Pablo, my "informal" UOA on a DoubleGuard filter on a 93 Honda Accord was premature engine failure at 99K miles! No hard proof but I used this filter one time, and clogged passages apparently did the engine in within a year. The car received regular oil changes (mostly 10W30) at 3-3.5K...
