    Boron/Sodium/Potassium Ratios

I'm getting positive glycol using ASTM D2982 method for detecting glycol in used lube oil. The reason why I'm asking about the ratios, is that the Spectrometric results are very low (however there are only 300 km on the oil that was tested). A blank oil was also checked for glycol to eliminate...

Beater Ford Ranger...BAD 5th gear in Tranny

Thanks for the info. Once the tranny is rebuilt once again, I'll try a lighter oil. OR...stay out of 5th gear and pay the extra on gas

    Boron/Sodium/Potassium Ratios

Can anyone tell me, from their experience, what the ratios of B/Na/K in antifreeze are? Thanks.

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

Guru, Thanks. I think I needed that. WE have 1000 km before we have to return it. That'll buy me some time to look for another cuz it's only an exchange policy. Maybe it'll die before then and I'll say..."TOLD YA SO" to the service dude who won't consider my results because i'm cheating the...

    Doesn't Anyone use K&N?

I've been using K&N which has an efficient removal of 10-20 micron particles. Any comments?

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

Thanks for all of the valuable comments guys! Nothing better to do on a Friday night, I'm back from work testing my own oil once more! Not only has the glycol increased, but a flashpoint shows approx 0.5% fuel dilution on only 500 km. Worn ring/liners ya think? And the decision is......truck is...

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

How can I trend my own vehicle when I just purchased it two weeks ago. I already thought I overkilled on the analysis. I haven't kept the oil in long enough to check the lead numbers, but I think it'll be going back. You want to hear the funny thing? I've had lots of training by Noria and...

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

Thanks Jelly, Who knows how long it's been leaking in, and you're very right about it possibly being long term erosive wear from the glycol. I'd love to keep the truck, so once the leak is fixed, I'll monitor it closely and try a bit more lube protection. Thanks for the info. Good night.

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

Thanks. Actually, I can see a conflict of interest, with me being the lab analyst checking the oil of my own truck and submitting my report to the Dealer. They were supposed to pressure test it today, but instead, just changed the oil and sent away the oil to another lab for confirmation, but I...

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

I'm not mad at you, just frustrated at the whole situation. The "big chunk wear"...I guess it's Ferrography Analyst talk. I'm trying to figure out where the wear is coming from and if it is worth keeping the vehicle or not.

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

Jelly, Of course I'm getting the leak fixed before I switch oils (that is if the leak can be found). The oil has been drained and replaced with cheapo oil a few times in the past week to monitor wear and glycol levels. And..I think I'd rather get the problem fixed or return the vehicle rather...

Help me decide Mobil 1 0W40

OK..I need some feedback. Pretty big chunks of cast iron and steel severe sliding wear in my Vortec V6 1998 GMC Sierra oil sample. I'm thinking of switching to Mobil 1 0W40 SuperSyn for extra wear protection and thicker oil wedge. Any responses? You think this will void my warranty if I switch...

Oil coking? How will I know?

You could get an early indication of coking by sending the oil for analytical ferrography. Typically, coking would be seen as larger agglomerates of soot. The viscosity should increase as well.

Please help me interpret these charts

Rob, Because these are area graphs, they will drop down to zero on the x-axis. There is only one data point, which is why it looks like a triangle. The date of 1/01/00 seems to be a null date and probably shouldn't be there. The numbers of 6.8 and 3.9 on the Wear Particle Graph correspond to...

    Refractometer for anti-freeze?

The refractometer that I use for coolant condition would be the one that measures freeze protection for both ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. It also gives you the %value of glycol. This would tell you if you need to add water or not. I think you can buy them for a few hundred dollars.

    Soft brake pedal

Did you by chance change the brake fluid lately? If there is accumulation of moisture in your brake fluid, it may reduce the boiling point significantly. The reason we like brake fluid not to boil is simple: Brake fluid is subject to high temperatures in the brake calipers, so when it boils, it...

    brake fluid flush?!?!

You could go through the expense of getting your brake fluid tested or you could just faithfully change it every 12 months. DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluids are glycol-based. Dirt, moisture and sometimes petroleum products are the most common contaminants which may lead to brake system failure. Water...
