2011 Subaru Impreza - Drive Axle Replacement

A friend, great person and neighbour, heard a bad noise coming from the front end of his 2011 Subaru Impreza. He looked underneath, and found a split open boot on the passenger-side outer CV joint. He bought a TrakMotive unit locally, and brought it over this evening. We installed it without...

    s. Ownsig (bolted to the hub with lug nuts)

The title says it all - I have a set of the Tenhulzen alignment plates for checking and setting toe-in, and find it's hard to get totally consistent readings due to how the plates sit against the rims by using plastic stand-offs. I saw the bolt-on style, and wonder whether they would be more...

"November 1963" movie being filmed here

Yesterday I met up with a friend for coffee (well, actually cold icy drinks given our present heatwave) and cycled back to his house with him before heading home. He mentioned that the movie "November 1963" was being filmed in his neighbourhood, and to watch for it as I headed home. Sure...

I "flew" an Airbus A320 in a simulator

This was a delightful gift from my wife. We took off from YYJ (Victoria BC, on Vancouver Island), and did a short hop over to YVR (Vancouver BC). Then we attempted several landings here (YWG - Winnipeg Richardson International). We may have been able to walk away from one or two landings. I...

A last hurrah for the manual transmission

    Here's a dash-mounted 3-speed manual, alive and well at a local playground.

A couple of random bike photos

Sr citizens - a 1987 Bianchi Grizzly, and a 2002 Rocky Mountain Fusion. What's that in bike years? This was early morning in front of the Y. I liked the way the low sun was reflecting off the bikes. The phone camera did not do it justice. ******* Waiting for a slow train to pass, while out...

Old Winter Tires - A Bridge Too Far

I don't reckon these'll be good for more'n another two or three winters. 😉

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan - Replacement Struts

A friend has a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan he bought new. It's close to 250K km now, and is due for front struts. The owner would prefer to replace the struts with the "quick strut" style, rather than reusing the factory springs. Of the choices shown on Rock Auto, I would likely go for the KYB...

1984 Brit DIY Car Maintenance/Repair Periodicals - Cost Of Shipping Only

Anyone interested in copies of CAR FIX IT, a weekly Brit periodical from 1984? Yours for the cost of shipping. I have issues #7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15-17, and 19-22. There were 72 in all. These might have nostalgic value for some of our Brit, Aussie, or Kiwi members.

2012 Chevy Sonic - Brake Rotor Rusted On

My friend phoned yesterday saying that his 2012 Sonic was making a terrible noise when braking. He had already picked up new brake pads, but not rotors. We did the passenger side first, which went well. The pads were thin (c. 3 mm (1/8")) but wearing evenly. The rotor still appeared to be in...

New Battery-powered Lawnmower - Misleading Marketing

A friend recently bought a new electric (battery, not corded) lawnmower - WORX brand, 40 V, 14", advertised as having with two batteries. It was on sale for around C$300. I thought, good, that way you can have one battery charging while you cut with the other. As it turns out, the mower runs...

    Rusty Mercedes SUV

I think of German cars in general as being quite rust-resistant, and was surprised to see this poor thing in traffic today. The front looked just as bad. I'd bet it spent its first few years in the rust belt somewhere

    2009 Kia Sedona - Front Wheel-bearing Replacement

If you're really bored, you can look up the predecessor to this thread, posted by me May 2, 2018. (Where do the years go?) Before removing the front driver's-side wheel to address a slow leak, I found there was quite a bit of play in the wheel. I confirmed it was not the ball joint or tie-rod...

    Aged-out Tires From 2011

Yesterday I did a bit of a mechanical inspection on an elderly lady's 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. There was a sloppy ball joint, one cracked CV boot, and one split-open CV boot, but the really scary thing was the tires: Adequate tread left, but those sidewalls are scary! 😳

Saw this guy at a local used-car dealership which brings in minty older vehicles from the west coast. I had not seen an Aerostar in a few years - they are pretty rare here now.

Sidewall Damage - Cosmetic or Dangerous?

This is regarding my friend's 2012 Chevy Sonic. We were doing the seasonal tire swap (winters to 3-season tires) and noticed sidewall damage to a couple of the tires. I am looking for feedback as to how significant this is - can the tires be run safely? The long sidewall cut is about 1 mm...

My son and I visited the retired aircraft carrier USS Hornet last week. It was stunning. Highly recommended if you're in the SF Bay area. More photos to follow.

Outdoor Fuse Panel (In A Much Milder Climate Than I'm Used To)

This installation (with the fuse panel outside rather than indoors) shocked me, but the house is about a hundred years old, and the climate (SF Bay area) is way milder than here (Canadian Prairies).
