    Valvoline Restore and Protect

I’m not so sure about inevitable. Everything is “depends” without proof. The rest is us speculating without proof. Tear downs are typically the proof looking into oil consumption if trying to prove it’s due to oil control ring cleanliness. While your example proves a problem prone engine isn’t...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

Good point. I believe their story, too. It’s relevance today though or when taken outside of that context; after understanding what occurred, is an important distinction. I also don’t think it’s accurate to say others should expect piston ring deposits will eventually happen to anyone else...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

A quick google search suggests 2009-2011 Acura TSX models have a known issue of developing oil consumption. It’s an expected outcome. So, if your vehicle is an outlier to being prone to severe oil consumption, that doesn’t make the oil the problem. It just proves some engines have operating...

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

*And with non-cheap oil or it will/could develop the piston ring deposits to some degree anyway despite more frequent maintenance. More steps for prevention and it’s way less likely to occur or become severe.

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

Yep. 5w-20 AMSOIL Signature Series is pretty stout for that grade if one wants to stick with it, although going up a grade is likely best practices in these problem prone engines.

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

As in it never happens as opposed to a small degree/percentage of interaction? Not betting here either, just talking general and relative info. Obviously, every situation is different and there may be exceptions to supposed interactions.

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

In addition to all of that, some manufacturer's have been recommending 10k mile OCIs blindly (less maintenance requirement as a selling point)... So, it's a perfect recipe for the oil burning saga. I can picture the use of bulk oil supplied entry level 0w-20 in combination. Yikes!

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

Well said. To further illustrate this: If Valvoline Restore and Protect could work purely as a fuel additive, they may have never bothered with developing the oil and only created the fuel additive. However, as is the case, oils are the primary source of, limiting factor to, and possible...

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

Poor fuel quality and/or dilution could make the problem worse, but it's not the root cause. Fuel dilution is not always present and the carbon deposits on piston rings still occur. ^So no, fuel itself may have nothing to do with the deposits at all. Depends on each individual situation. It's...

Oil Strategy To Prevent Carbon Piston / Ring Deposits ?

The issues related to oil consumption are regarding oil control ring cleanliness; not necessarily directly related the compression rings or the combustion chamber piston tops; more to the point. Fuel will not clean oil control rings. Regardless of the fuel used. It’s not making its way to the...

Positive experience with Mobil 1 Extended Performance. What makes it so smooth.

Just because I may not like the way my vehicle seemed to respond; anecdotally or subjectively, to a particular oil does not mean it had anything to do with the oil itself. 👀 So, to comment conclusions on the oil based on casual observation, really means nothing more than a simple observation...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

Valvoline Restore and Protect is $7.2 per Quart at WM in the 5 Qt jugs. And, the performance is what matters. An oil change savings of $16 every few months is not a big deal. You want the better performing oil. Saving money here and potentially having worse long-term ownership results isn't...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

Did you happen to post that analysis or would you mind sharing the results? Curious the ways it was spent at the time of sample. Of course, other oils may have a wide variation of results.

New AMSOIL Signature Series formulation rolling out

@kschachn To your larger point earlier, attributing blame without verifiable proof is mere speculation and irresponsible. Correlation does not equal causation. It's basic folks! A group of people that may have happened to be using Amsoil in a problem prone outboard motor gives the oil (Amsoil...

New AMSOIL Signature Series formulation rolling out

Indeed. Word choice matters. It's a good insight into where someone is coming from. For fun, I asked Google AI this question "did amsoil 2t oil cause Yamaha VZ300 outboard failure seizure" and found this thread...

New AMSOIL Signature Series formulation rolling out

You have to see things from the other side. If I said the same story to you and the boards here regarding let's say Mobil1 and no one else has ever heard of the story, how on Earth do I expect people to believe me? And, what is more, what does that have to do with Mobil1 today? It's just...

New AMSOIL Signature Series formulation rolling out

Even if all of that is true, it was indeed over 2 decades ago and for sake of the conversation it has no legitimate point to modern day Amsoil. Not saying your story is true or not, but at this point does it even matter? Maybe there was a bad batch? How do we know it wasn't a mechanical problem...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

@ChrisD46 Nice comment on your observations. However, most of what your post observed is anecdotal at best without a UOA to back it up. Noise, color and smell; by themselves, simply isn’t enough quality data to state a recommendation conclusively. It may mean something or it may mean nothing...

    Amsoil Signature Series & GF-7

I suppose the questions to ask would be what differences would be notable to measure in a high # of cold start cycles with insufficient heating and more fuel presence (likely)?
