2026 Rav4 First oil change 581miles - used oil analysis

Thanks for sharing. I'm at almost 1,500 miles on mine now. I'm still unsure when I'll do my first one, as I want to spread out my few containers of 0W-8 that I bought with the impending shortages.

    Toyota 90915-YZZN1 C&P

Yours has fared much better than mine, even though I retired it a good ~15 years ago. My basket is much more loose and warped, and my pan is much more dirty. Does your yellow cap leak as well if you tilt it full of oil? I seem to remember mine seeping, so I stopped using it as a transport vessel.

    Toyota 90915-YZZN1 C&P

I have that same drain pan as well, but I stopped using it when I got a larger Blitz one a few years later. I can't remember where I got mine, but most likely AutoZone about 20 years ago. The basket in mine is also loose, and oil would splash whenever it hits the basket just right.

Is Mobil ESP 0w30 and 0w40 X4 the top dogs right now?

I've been out of the game for a while, but what is so special about ESP vs. their standard Mobil 1 offerings? I usually just use AFE or EP.

New Fram XG6607 Ultra cut open

Interesting date code... this filter isn't from 2001, though. I'm not even sure it would've been an Xtended Guard back in 2001. I assume you already know it isn't actually 2001, though, and I'm just missing something.

    Honda Dealership 0W-20 6.3k mi, 2019 Civic 2.0L K20C2 35k mi - used oil analysis

I agree. I changed the oil per the OLM in my 07 Accord and it is still running to this day at ~680,000 miles. Previous owner always had it dealer serviced per the OLM as well. I don't follow it in my Civic, though, because I just change it once a year per their recommendation if the OLM doesn't...

Filter recommendations now that First Brands is gone (Valvoline/Super Tech oils; personal + mobile shop)

Hey fellow West Michigander. I'd recommend hitting up Rock Auto and stocking up on some of the common sizes. They have a pretty decent selection and with combined shipping and bulk pricing (on some filters), the price per filter is very decent. I've had good luck with Hastings filters as far as...

    How does a modern 5w30 compare to a 1990s 10w30

Welcome back @TallPaul. I tend to take some long hiatus as well. How’s the ketchup stash?

Flavors of the year from BITOG past..

I remember when Auto-RX was THE thing here at BITOG when I first joined. Back then, some the main oils that people talked about were GC 0W-30, Motorcraft 5W-20, Trop Artic, Havoline/Chevron, and Pennzoil Platinum (and its cleaning ability). Castrol Edge and Pennzoil Ultra were a big deal too.

    Post your latest oil change

I had a 2008 tC that burned about a quart every 2,500 miles. That's funny about the contradictory information about oil grades. I don't remember that being in my manual, but it's been a long time since I had it. I'm pretty sure my oil cap just said 0W-20, and that's what I always used. I wish I...

2026 Rav4 First oil change 581miles - used oil analysis

Thanks for sharing. I'm at just over 600 miles on mine. I plan to do an early change at 2,500 and again at 5,000 and get used oil analysis for my first few OCIs until I establish trends. I'll be using Mobil 1 0W-8 and a Toyota filter for my early changes as well, and I'll let the dealer do the...

Valvoline MaxLife Semi-Synthetic - Anyone Using?

I always used MaxLife in engines that had oil leaks. It did a fairly good job of slowing/stopping them when cost prohibitive to replace seals. Not sure how much it would do for sludge -- I feel Valvoline Restore and Protect would do a better job in that case.

Castrol EDGE Euro on sale at Walmart

I tried going to our local store to get some, and it was showing up at full price when I got there. The next day, I was able to order 3 jugs online and both were delivered the next day right to my house for the sale price. It only let me order a max of 3 as it said only 3 were available.

It's all good - I wasn't upset in the least by your post, and my reply wasn't intended to be defensive. Apologies if it came off that way.

I just saw that after I posted -- I figured this might still be helpful for someone who didn't read through that entire thread and wasn't aware.

First Brands Agrees To $25 Million Sale of Key Auto Parts Brands (Fram, etc.)

https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/first-brands-agrees-25-million-195039670.html Saw this while researching Fram filters earlier today. As much as some folks dislike them, there are some Fram filters that I quite like and I hope the new buyer (Premium Guard) is able to turn it...
