2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

Well dang, I’m learning a lot about brakes today. I did have a few drops of fluid come out when fixing the seal back into place, and knowing they’re just dust covers now means I guess there is indeed a leak at the seal further back even if it’s a small one. Funny enough I went over to a...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

I think I just have flashbacks from trying to find tubing to fit down my transmission dipstick hole, that would also fit on a pump I had. Not fun! I’ve done some pondering and I think calipers may be the ticket. I was reading up on how calipers retract, aside from when being forced like when...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

All good ideas- honestly, worried about collapsing the brake hose and I’ll have the calipers on quick enough. Biggest pain of this job will be finding the right ID hose to bleed, and dealing with the bankers hours at the local hardware store.

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

If I’m being 100% honest it feels a LITTLE wobbly at 25 and higher, but the roads by me are so crappy that I chalk up a bit of rough ride to cheap and quick road resurfacing. Cleaned all mounting surfaces with a wire brush a few times. Unfortunately I know almost no one that is good with cars...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

You’re nailing it. I’m thinking the ONLY thing I did was change my brakes. I’m now leaning towards replacing front calipers even if they “seem” ok. I originally used Wagner rotors and Bosch pads. After I thought the rotors might be out of balance, I put on Bosch rotors and Wagner pads- just...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

Good thinking- I’m going to go to a very good tire shop this weekend and have them all road force balanced. I think they’ll have a better idea. The local place I went I trust with most things but this may be a bit out of their wheelhouse, more than a simple issue that they likely deal with day...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

Dang that’s another thing I forgot to say I replaced! Replaced engine mount, trans mount, and dogbone with OEM mounts about 50k miles ago. That was a bear of a job, but I got OEM to avoid having to do them again soon.

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

I agree, I know Toyotas in particular can be picky with calipers and I’ve heard Highlanders having issues from them. My front driver caliper is about a year old, front left maybe a bit older. The pins are nice and moving, and the pistons compress with no issue. Those will definitely be on the...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

That’s a good thought- I live near the Catskills though and on highway speeds when it has to drop down to get up a mountain it doesn’t seem to affect it. I know it’s not dropping that low, but definitely not in top gear.

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

I’m thinking of bringing them all for road force balancing actually, seems like a relatively low cost way to find out of it’s a suspension problem. Worst case scenario is I have four well balanced tires and I know the vibration is not from them. Your axle story makes me think mine might just...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

Oof, hope this isn’t my case. Did you have any other symptoms? I was thinking it might be a transmission issue but it seems totally unrelated to load, just speed, so I wasn’t necessarily thinking in that direction.

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

2011 Toyota Highlander AWD. 265,000 miles but who’s counting? This is the most baffling shake I’ve ever had because I’ve checked or replace so many things chasing it. Short story is I get a shake around 55mph and up. Feel it in the steering wheel, it feels like the ride is rough. It’s hard to...
