2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

Thanks for the info.. I will try to look up that ASTM method to learn about it. I typically see it on analyticals as “SetaFlash” or something to that effect when I request a flashpoint, I don’t recall if they include an astm method. Can you recommend a vendor that does perform gas...

Talk me out of using 0w-20 in my Explorer 2.3T (specs 5w-30)

Not that long ago drag cars were running anything from 10W-30 to 20W-50 to straight 40 50 or 60 weight depending on the engine. If you look at cars at your average drag strip now (outside of the top fuel and funny car scene) I’d bet a lot of them use thinner oil than you would expect. Not saying...

Talk me out of using 0w-20 in my Explorer 2.3T (specs 5w-30)

Never said he was - just citing an application where one might use a thinner than spec oil

2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

In my industry, we generally wouldn’t quantify contamination based solely on flashpoint. We’d use flashpoint as an indicator that something volatile may be present, then use additional analytical methods to identify and quantify the contaminant. I understand that for a consumer level oil...

2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

Meant to say “degradation”, not “depletion” when I was mentioning additives. They can’t leave the building when they’re inside a sealed container!

2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

That is good information, thank you. I was not aware of the flashpoint being used by Blackstone to estimate fuel dilution percentage. I have samples analyzed for flashpoint (and many other parameters) as part of my job all the time but they simply report the flashpoint, not an estimated dilution...

2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

I appreciate your response. This isn’t intended to be a standalone result, this will be repeated again with the next drain interval and then again after switching back to Delvac. I’m not looking to compare oils I’m looking for increases/decreases in trace elements to give me hints on engine...

Talk me out of using 0w-20 in my Explorer 2.3T (specs 5w-30)

Surprised no one has mentioned the fact that racers commonly run thinner oils for qualifying and for squeaking out small amounts of extra hp from an engine. Windage loss and frictional losses from thick oil with poor oil control (think wet sump with no windage tray, improperly sized/undersized...

2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

To be clear, both oils are SAE 15W-40 viscosity grade with API ratings of CK-4/SN (Sunoco) and CJ-4/SM (Shell). The owner's manual specifies SAE 5W-30 with a minimum rating of API SM. I have been using Mobil Delvac 1300 15W-40 CK-4/SP for the last few years with good "seat of the pants" results...

2012 Nissan VQ40DE Sunoco Super C/Shell Rimula Super short oil change interval - used oil analysis

High mileage VQ40DE baseline used oil analysis on a mix of Sunoco Super C 15W-40 (CK-4/SN) and Shell Rimula Super (CJ-4/SM). Mix was 1 gallon of Sunoco and 2 quarts of Shell to conveniently use my stash (I have gallon jugs of Sunoco and quarts of Rimula) over 3 short oil change intervals. This...
