Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

Many need to learn how to be helpful instead of coming across with attitude and unfriendliness. Attacking me as I try to add to the discussion does not help or do it for me. LSJ has been a big help in helping to educate others but when I see people put down his credentials and act like they know...

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

That's why I listen to people that know a lot more than I do. LSJ has more experience and expertise that I do and most of use do combined as he's the expert in the field. This is why I listen to what he sees as he can see more, understand it, and over the years see any trends that I might miss.

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

Well, that's because it's a tool that we have access to. It's a tool, that's it. There are many of you attacking me as I was just trying to help provide more information, so much for that idea.

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

Then what's the point of any of this? Just use a quality oil and be done with it. LSJ has more knowledge and is an exp[ert in the field, unlike most keyboard warriors.

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

He has done some videos on filters. I did ask him about oil filters as I've always used Toyota oil filters without ever having an issue. He said that they are fine to use but we didn't talk about them more.

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

One is looking at wear metals to see if one was lower than the other. On the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum both looked good across the board but wear metals were 20% lower with the 5w-30. I'll continue to follow it to see if this continues.

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

This is what LSJ said about my 2009 Turbo Corolla too, but he wanted to see what differences we saw with both viscosities. Since the GR Corolla calls for 0w-20, and many of us use 5w-30, it made sense to see how and if the engine preferred one over the other for how I drive it.

GR Corolla/Amsoil 0w-20 oil temp questions..

As I've said, I never planned on doing it. I've tested both viscosities to see what my engine liked and how it worked with both viscosities. The ow-20 is what is recommended, I wanted to see if 5w-30 or even 0w-30 was a better option. This is where Lake Speed Jr said let's test them both and see...

GR Corolla/Amsoil 0w-20 oil temp questions..

I didn't say I would be doing that. I did it this past winter as I'm testing both 0w-20 and 5w-30 with Lake Speed Jr. That being said, for people that live with summer heat and much colder winter temps I could see why people do it. In the summer people may drive their cars harder, track it, and...

GR Corolla/Amsoil 0w-20 oil temp questions..

Not sure why you would say this as it could be viable for people that live in extreme temperature ranges. This being said I pointed out that I would be fine running 5w-30 year round in my region. 😉

    HPL 75w-90 gear oil

I've been reluctant to try anything other than Redline MT-LV in the transmission since I've had such excellent results with it over the past 15 years. I'm very intrigued by the HPL though and for the transfer case and rear diff I'm very interested.

GR Corolla/Amsoil 0w-20 oil temp questions..

I have concerns running 0w-20 in any turbo car. I to own a GR Corolla and I've been thinking about this since I bought it more than 3 years ago. I have used 5w-30 in the summers with excellent OCI results. I could also run it year round as I don't see winter temps lower than the 20F-30F and in...

    HPL 75w-90 gear oil

I just changed the transmission gear oil with some fresh Redline MT-LV in my GR Corolla and 09 Turbo Corolla. I figure when I run out of it I'll order some HPL. I've got less of the GL-5 75w/85 gear oil for the transfer case and rear diff of my GR Corolla and nothing said that it was a GL-5...

    HPL 75w-90 gear oil

Thanks, that seemed like the logical choice. The GL-5 gear oil for the transfer case and rear diff was less clear to me.

Long Term Oil Testing With Lake Speed, Jr aka "The Motor Oil Geek"

I'm doing a long term test with Lake Speed, Jr. on my 2023 GR Corolla and my 2009 Turbo Corolla S. Both cars recommended 0w-20 but on my 2009 that was before turbocharging it. I got a lot of different opinions about 0w-20, 0w-30, 5w-20, and 5w-30. I reached out the Lake and he suggested we do a...

    Youtube Oil Experts

Jason is a good guy and knows his stuff. He lives near me and I've been trying to meet up with him for years. Now that he has a GR Corolla I've been trying to get him to meet up with our local group. I like Lake Speed, Jr and I'm even doing an oil test with him now. I just wish that YouTube...

    Oil change in parking lot

I was on a road trip last year in NC and I found a large parking lot where the store had closed down. Parked under a nice tree for shade and went to it. On my turbo cars I don't like to go past 5k miles before changing the oil. I was in my 2009 Turbo Corolla S for this trip.

    HPL 75w-90 gear oil

I'm just trying to get HPL gear oils straight in my mind. I've been using Redline gear oil for years with excellent results but I've heard amazing things about HPL. I'm not that familiar with them and didn't see them listing if gear oils were GL4 or GL5. This is what I've been using in my cars...

HPL Oil discount code for BITOG

I just placed an order for some 75w/90 gear oil for my GR Corollas transfer case and rear diff and used the 15% off code. I also got a refund on the shipping of $6 which surprised me. I figured that most companies would just pocket it as I would never have known. After I ordered it though I...
