Wife's assessment when the Wife dies before the Husband

This happened with my grandfather, and there is no way that having to wash a few dishes killed a man that spent 40 plus years building houses in the hot Florida sun. Standing at a sink washing a few plates in the AC and folding some towels wasn't so hard as to kill him. Loosing the love of his...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20 7k mi - 08 Honda Accord, 365k mi

Never seen it with a DW-1 application with regular changes. Most people don't do regular ATF swaps so it happens for them. What do I know though I've only driven Hondas for 20 years some with 400K plus miles, and worked at a Honda dealership as a young adult before joining the Navy. Yes that...

Z1 Yes that fluid was a problem I was specifically mentioning DW1 applications.

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20 7k mi - 08 Honda Accord, 365k mi

It is very generation and engine specific. Fluid changes help them of course but it doesn't solve the issue. Most Hondas are fine on that front and the DW1 Honda fluid keeps them going just fine as well. I got 400K out of an Accord doing 30K spill and fills on Honda DW1, the car was totaled from...

How long does it take for a new oil to trash an old transmission?

That may be true doesn't quite make sense as clutch materials are chosen due to their high friction properties. Again though perhaps that is correct. I just can't wrap my head around how a thicker fluid that is loaded with grit would decrease friction.

How long does it take for a new oil to trash an old transmission?

New fluid has not ever and will not ever damage a transmission. That woukx be like saying oil changes damage engines. If done correctly it will never cause a problem at worst it will reveal a problem that was already there. Such as worn clutch packs that are only holding on because of the fluid...

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-20 7k mi - 08 Honda Accord, 365k mi

This is the first I have heard of a K24 powered Accord being a problem child or anything outside of a gem. The J powered Accords yes those can be problematic with transmissions specifically.

What are you doing right now?

Wondering why my company still uses PLC 5 in 2025. We can't even get parts for this stuff anymore without ebay.

    Rant, eating out

Never made made eating out a habit so never had to cut back, but I understand the issue as I see grocery prices these days. My wife and I grew up poor well first world poor no heat in the winter and only one pair of dollar store shoes for the school year. Not like actually truly poor. Side note...

Is it reasonable to expect more than 15 years and 200k from an older car ?

I daily drive a 2010 Civic Si with over 250,000 miles. Original engine, original transmission, second clutch, second starter, second belt tensioner, and second power steering pump. Still fires up quick, and has most of its horses still in the barn. My wife has a 2013 CRV that is all original...

I want to run a thicker oil but…

I have had engine run their entire lives on 5w-30 when speced 0w-20 I just moved to 10w-40 in my neighbors 350K Tahoe that's burning about 1 quart every 1.5k. 3 runs of Valvoline Restore and Protect didnt help so I imagine the rings are just worn not stuck. You will be fine going to 10w-30 or...

    Model Loyalty

I am not as much as brand loyalty guy for daily drivers. (All my project cars have been BMW or Honda.) As for daily drivers I avoid certain brands more so than seeking out a certain brand. If it is GM, Stellantis, or made in Korea it's a no go.

Any cars you regret buying? - My '14 CR-V experience

Yeah if it was just uncomfortable I might have lived with it. It was the combination of being terrible in basically everyway that got me. Want power nope dont have that my Civic SI has as much power. Want good fuel mileage because you are sacrificing all that power nope you get 20 mpg if youre...

    Manual transmission used daily

My ranking worst to best. Honda Accord seems odd but depending on year the double wishbone suspension and the K24 up front make it way more of a driver's car than you would expect. Mazda 3 Mazadas are just fun cars. Hard to go wrong with one really. Civic SI my top choice in this case...

Any cars you regret buying? - My '14 CR-V experience

Never regretted buying a car to this point. I have regretted getting rid of one. It was my 2007 Accord EX. Life circumstance/redundancy of vehicles caused me to sell it. I wish I had that car now honestly. Actually there is one vehicle. A 2014 Toyota Tacoma. Aside from the well deserved...

Anyone else never own an oil burning vehicle?

Well I wouldn't call any of them trye oil burners but with the number of vehicles I've had north of 300K I have had some that loose oil between changes. I wouldn't really call adding a half quart or so every 5K a real burner. Thats sort of a semantics thing though.

Is it necessary to replace filter if you do regular fluid changes?

It wouldn't hurt to swap the filter but I look at it this way just by doing regular fluid swaps you you ahead of 90% of people. I have seen vehicles with 300K on them on the factory fill in the transmission. If it will make you feel better sure swap the filter it can't hurt and it might help. I...
