    The reason the cord is important is that there is a pressure gradient through the tire. Cord fabric tends to wick air pressure and if exposed, will give a higher pressure where it is not wanted, so it will blow off the sidewall.

    I stand corrected. That is indeed cord, and the normal response to seeing cord is to replace the tire. I don't know why I didn't see it before. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Maybe YOU are driving slowly when cornering, but some people aren't - and those are the ones this recommendation is aimed at. Besides, most people are cautious when it rains, but even the most cautious people will get surprised now and then. Again, this is why the recommendation exists.

    I don't think this is a tire and/or wheel issue. The way this is described is a third order harmonic and 3rd order harmonics are extremely rare when it comes to tires/wheels. I'm not saying it is impossible, but it seems incredibly unlikely.

    I think it's ok as is. That part is usually just rubber, or at worst some bit of fabric that isn't important. But keep an eye on it - monitoring for leakage.

    Ok, a bit more information about why I don't like what I see in the location of those cracks. When radial tires are made, the tread slab ends just about where the cracks are. There also some minor cracking in line with those major cracks. That makes me think that the top belt is lifting off...

    I don't like the location, so I recommend replacing them now and keeping a close watch on the others.

    Ya' know, Load Range D tires are sometimes known as 8 ply tires, so why do they only have 4 plies? Could it be that the plies can have different strengths? So couldn't you make a 2 ply as strong as an 8 ply? So maybe the number of plies isn't a good indicator of the strength?
