Are magnetic drain plugs worth it?

I have one on my Volvo. (Volvo owners - very inexpensive from FCP Groton!!) There's usually a few tiny, black, dust-speck sized iron particals on it when I do an OC. If for no other reason, they can be practical if you have a steel oil pan. Whenever I'm draining hot oil, I just loosen it and...

    Winterforce tires

I'll be entering my 3rd Winter season w/Winterforces(non-studded)on my Volvo. I have about 15k miles on this set and there's still plenty of tread left. They're OK for a non-performance Winter tire. So far, I've only encountered 1 snow/ice covered hill that I couldn't climb. If I had studs it...

    Simple Question (2.0 VW)

I'm currently running Castrol Syntec 5W40 in my Wife's `03 Golf 2.0. The only reason its in there is because it was free(...it helps having friends who are VW techs ). But I'd much rather have the Valvoline.

    Do you tip your mechanic?

The professional mechanic(s) that fix my cars are also my friends & co-workers. They usually only ask for a fraction of what a regular repair shop would charge and I always give `em a little $extra$.

How long does it take to change your oil? Be honest.

30min....I work @ an auto repair facility and use thier lifts/tools/used oil disposal. During my 1hr lunch-break I can usually pull my car into the shop, do the OC, and still have 30min to actually eat my lunch.

    New additive from Chevron

I have to agree with kang on this one. I tried a bottle in my Volvo several weeks ago. The only difference I noticed was a reduction in engine knock while going uphill w/ the AC on. Never again(at least w/o the rebate ).

    First hand high mileage experience

Currently @ 235,000 miles on my `93 Volvo 240 Wagon. I purchased it 8yrs ago w/ 72,000 miles on it. Its seen a variety of different motor oils(3-4k OCIs), but Maxlife 10W30 has been the mainstay. This is my 2nd high-mileage Volvo. My 1st was an `83 245 purchased w/32k miles and driven to 225k...

    Best oil.... for the price

quote:
Originally posted by Stuart Hughes: While it lasts: many of the WalMarts have Valvoline MaxLife, in a box of 5 qts, on sale for $7.50. That's only 12 cents a qt more than Supertech.

<img border="0" alt="[Cheers!]" title=""...

Valvoline Lost $10 million in 3rd Qtr

    Aww,man....now I feel guilty about stocking up on the MaxLife 5pks for $7.50 @ Wallyworld. Wait a minute...no I don't.

    Chevron's PurEscape fuel catalyst

I tried a bottle of it in my Volvo..... . The only thing I noticed is that the car was less prone to pinging w/ the AC on while under heavy throttle load. Cost me $7.99 @ PB and I used the rebate. Kind of pricey for...

    Yokohama - Oh mama

The Yoko Avid Tourings on my Volvo are 3yrs old and have about 60k miles on them. I haven't measured tread depth recently, but it appears that they'll last another 20k easily. These certainly aren't performance tires, but they are extremely smooth & quiet.

What filter do you use and why?

I recently began using Supertech OFs on my Volvo. My motivation was price & availability. I realize that the OE Mann filters are superior, but they also $cost$ twice(at least)as much and are simply too well made for my frequent 3-4k OCIs.

    What oil to use?

, oilleakbill Glad to have another old RWD Volvo owner here, and a local one at that! My current "ol' school swede" is a `93 245 w/234k miles. You may already be well aware...but if oil leaks are a primary...

    3-4k oil changers - a question/poll.....

3-4K here as well on my high-mileage Volvo. The car does have a minor, but rather timely, consumption problem. Once I hit 1500mi on an OCI, it will start to eat about 1/4qt every 500mi. I've tried extending the OCI slightly, but the consumption seems to get exponentially worse as I creep over 4k...
