General altimax rt43 vs douglas 195/70r14

I bought my son a 2013 Jetta that had brand new Altimax tires last fall. They are pretty good and seem to be wearing well 6 months in. I had not had them before so I looked through a lot of reviews on Tirerack and they were mostly saying the same thing... good tire, but remember that it is a...

how come so many people change to a thicker oil or think there oil is too thin?

I think people here are looking for the oil that can best protect their engine. There are a lot of factors that must be weighed in that decision and oil weight is but one.

Generator, 10,000W dual fuel gas & propane ??

I have a Firman dual fuel generator from Costco. I used both propane and gasoline to power it during the same power outage That ended up lasting about 12 hours. Started with propane tank then after it looked like it would be a while, I switched to gasoline for the remainder. Worked out good...

    401k and the "censored" curve

Just keep accumulating those shares. When you need it, it’ll be worth more... I’ve been saving in my 401k for just over 20 years and I keep it simple. I did rebalance during the market decline twice this year, but thats not an overly aggressive move, just kind of standard investment stuff...

Interesting rear brake job on 2007 Ford Edge

I guess I’ve been lucky that I’ve not needed to grind those channels before. I always take the time to get the crud and rust off when I’m doing a brake job, just never saw it quite like this.

Interesting rear brake job on 2007 Ford Edge

My brother-in-law came over complaining about a grinding noise at the passenger rear side wondering if I could take a look. When I took the wheel off I saw right away that the outboard brake pad was down to the metal backing and clearly stuck against the rotor. The inbound pad was okay, with...

This car has 40,000 miles on it. For the tranny, are you suggesting drain and refill?

Bought used VW Jetta with 2.5 - should I dump the oil

Thanks all. What OCIs are you running in your VW 2.5 engines? Given the low annual mileage I am expecting my son to drive, I’m thinking just going annually.

Where are you getting tires mounted and balanced?

For the Michelin tires on my Explorer, I bought them on Tire Rack and had them shipped to and installed at local Tires Plus. Installation cost about $100 total... They did a good job and it was easy...

Bought used VW Jetta with 2.5 - should I dump the oil

Good eye! As far as I can tell, this has a more traditional PS system. Haven’t researched it though. I can tell that the steering is very differe from the electric steering on our Fords. My son noticed right away. Feels more substantial and provides better feedback.

Bought used VW Jetta with 2.5 - should I dump the oil

So the oil change was interesting, at least getting the oil filter housing off was... The old (stamped steel) oil filter cap wrench I tried to use to get the severely over-tightened cap off broke on the first try! I had to order the new filter wrench (one pictured) online in order to get it...

Bought used VW Jetta with 2.5 - should I dump the oil

Great tips all. Been looking it over in the garage this afternoon. There is a note (written in sharpie) on the brake fluid reservoir that the brake fluid was changed in Feb 2020, so that is good. The air filter looks brand new, also good. The plastic oil filter housing looks like it was man...
