Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

Weak oil systems have always been a Buick problem. Anyone that knows older Buicks knows this. Fortunately, the aftermarket has the parts to correct it.

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

I remember when the ZR1 came out in 90. Even it had a tough time with a GN.

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

There's many differences. They're all relatively minor per se, but add up in a big way. What made the GNX a GNX are the following improved items: turbo, intercooler, inlet pipe, ECM calibration, O2 sensor and exhaust system, external trans cooler and "shift kit", strengthened/redesigned rear...

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

I second that. The Z06 is awesome and I'd normally take one in a heartbeat, but the latest Viper and its 600hp make this an easy decision. Viper all the way...........until Chevy one ups Dodge. This "horsepower war" is almost out of control, but it's awesome to be able to experience our own...

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

I'd never run a non-synthetic in a turbo engine, especially one that is worth some money. When you are dealing with valuable cars like a GN or GNX, the extra cost of a higher quality synthetic oil is negligible when you look at the big picture. If you have to count your pennies when doing...

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

Buick rated the GNX at 275hp. The GNX really put out about 300hp, give or take. Depending on who you talk to, some say it put out more, but 300's a good number to go by. Considering the Vette put out only 240hp, the GN and GNX flat out made incredible power from a V6 in 1987. The only Vette that...

    Overfilling transmissions?

I can't think of one reason why anyone should overfill a manual trans. Overfilling blows out the seals and the gear lube gets churned up by the gearset and it turns into a non-lubricating froth.

Engine Runs Cooler with New Prestone - Why ?

Nah. My engine and radiator are squeaky clean and were prior to the flush. The only reason I flushed was to get all the "green" stuff out before putting in the "yellow" stuff. Otherwise, I didn't "need" to flush it. The temp decrease is due to the antifreeze. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

    Never overfill manual transmissions.

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

I'd run Mobil 1 15W50 in it. The oil in those cars takes a beating from the turbo heat and also because the stock Buick oiling system is less than perfect for such a perfomance oriented car. It needs a thick, high quality synthetic in it to help keep it alive under extreme conditions.

Oil recommendations for 1987 Buick Grand National

No rumors. That is 100% correct. GM's higher ups were not happy that a little V6 could beat up their top of the line Corvette. The same thing happened again when the Turbo TA came out a couple of years later and once again when Syclone S10 came out a few years after it. Gotta love turbos.

Engine Runs Cooler with New Prestone - Why ?

I just flushed my cooling system and put in the same type of "yellow/green" Prestone long life pre-mix and my Jeep did the same thing afterwards. It runs about 5 degrees F cooler. It has to be something with the antifreeze as nothing else was touched.

    Coolant-Does it get depleted?

Never mix old style green antifreeze with any other type of antifreeze unless the bottle says you can.

    Stop Leak - Heat transfer?

Never use stop leak. Fix the problem.

    When to replace thermostat?

But when it does fail, you'd better hope it sticks open and not closed.

    When to replace thermostat?

I change my tstat when I change the radiator/heater hoses.....about every 30K-40K. People still change their hoses right? It's amazing that most people don't do the most basic of maintenance to their cars/trucks these days.

Should Auto Tranny be Overfilled for Protection?
