Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

When i restored my 66 Corvair in 2003, including all Viton O rings, hardened valve seats, roller-tip rockers and replaced the points with an electronic module, my initial concern was finding an oil with 1960's levels of ZDDP. Because of the cam and flat tappets I tried several synthetics...

BP Fuel Comes To Central Pennsylvania

Haven't Been using my BP card recently, they've been very high priced compared to Local Shell/Exxon/Sunoco which are TopTier, now the prices are down to $3.159 locally, including BP. I've been almost an exclusive user of TopTier (yeah, drank the cool-aid) but I do believe there is a difference...

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

You are correct, generally most Honda technicians reccomend running the factory fill for 5k. They explained that factory fill is generally Full-Synthetic Idemsu, but the engine is assembled with lot of moly assembly lubricant which helps with break-in when it mixes with the oil.

tire upgrade for 2025 Elantra Limited

Our 2025 Honda HRV EX-L came with unbelievably bad Hancook Synergy GT's, after 1 month the dealer exchanged them for Continental TrueContact Tour 54's. Read the reviews on tire rack, night and day difference in ride comfort, quietness, and dry handling. Wet traction is unbelievable and even...

    Societal addiction to phones

I was pretty dependent on my phone until I retired in 2017, as a field-service Biomedical Technician covering 105 outpatient sites, we got all service requests via either text or email. After I retired, I was asked to return as a consultant for 4 years part time. Now i use my phone as......wait...

    Societal addiction to phones

Happened to me twice at the same intersection 2 years apart with two different cars. same thing, young woman, small cheap sedan, talking on the phone. I try to avoid that intersection now, people don't know what "yield" means.

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

As you have previously mentioned, there is no magic oil. Among API rated oils, Mobil1 EP is generally well regarded. When dilution is a result of a specific design and worst case operating conditions (short trips, colder climate, etc) there are various options: Increase viscosity and/or shorter...

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

Actually, we switched the CRV over to 5W-30 EP and due to the almost exclusively short trips usage changed it twice a year. Ultimately we decided that using a vehicle with the 1.5t in this manner was not effective and traded it on a HRV EX-L that has the 2.0NA engine. This vehicle usually get...

    2021 Odyssey oil spec

I crossed that bridge a while ago, driving Hondas with the 1.5t engines that, unless operated under optimum conditions, tend to dilute oil, sometimes more sometimes less. 0w20 oil, combined with Hondas MM is not a good choice for engine longevity as numerous UOA's have demonstrated. With the...

An old MPG gizmo I found, the Elektro-Karb "sonic fuel vaporizer."

Most of you never heard of the Fish carburetor that was supposedly so good at increasing mpg that the oil companies bought the rights to it then buried it.

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

As a long-time Honda owner (close to 40 years) have been fortunate to have the acquaintance and friendship of several Honda Master-Certified Technicians who service our cars and been very honest and communicating about proper service. You are correct that most Honda customers follow the MM, use...

Oil for a road trip with numerous mountain passes?

Having driven Hondas exclusively for some years, lately with 1.5t engines and not being totally conversant with Subarus, I can't make an informed opinion other than this: If you’re on the edge over using 0w20, especially a dealers bulk/ unknown oil in what would be marginally severe service in...

    What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

It seems that most quality 0w20 oils work just fine in many applications with reasonable OCI's, the spoiler seems to be a combination of vehicle and use factors like short trips, low-tension piston rings, and forced induction combined with direct injection. I stopped agonizing over this and just...

    Regular vs Premium Gas Pricing

Here in Central Pennsylvania, usually find mid-grade .50 more and 93 a dollar more than 87, prices around here are about $3.40-50 for 87. Seems to go up every 3-4 days

    What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

In my 2023 Honda Civic Touring Sedan 1.5t, my favorite 0w20 is Mobil1 5W-30 EP, due to it's tendency to be a dilluter, usually 3-4K intervals, the HRV, is almost exclusively a short-tripper, but it's 2.0 engine is port-injected, gets changed twice a year with Mobil1 0w20 EP. I use Honda...

I am less than thrilled to buy next vehicle.

That ended in 2024, the Civic (non-hybrid) is now direct injection. Only the 2025 HRV still has the 2.0 port injection engines

    Best road trip vehicle?

Honda CRV Sport Touring Hybrid checks the boxes, I'd upgrade the factory installed tires to either Michelin Continental high performance all-season. 14 gallon tank, 40-50 mpg. Large comfortable rear seat. Power drivers sear has memory for two drivers. Power rear hatch with large cargo area.

Help with recommendation for motor oil for Toyota and Nissan daily drivers

Don't make it over complicated, use either Mobil1 5W-30 EP or 5W-30 VRP, 5k intervals, your filter choices are fine. Both oils have good track records for both protection and cleaning and are easily available often on sale. The main concern is direct injection, the solution is more frequent...
