Have you grown to dislike working from home?

I worked from home for a time. Ended up not caring for it: I prefer to have clear mental, physical separation between my work and home lives, where when I'm home, I don't think about work until 7AM next day. WFH inherently made that impossible.

Average new car price is $50K ? Insanity.

A number of us do well for ourselves, while still being capable of making sense of all of this. You're a step behind, bud.

Average new car price is $50K ? Insanity.

Either way, the essence of this site is inviting to the DIY'er. Most people with revolving car payments or newer vehicles aren't DIY'ers. With warranties, maintenance plans, and no concerns about the long term durability of their vehicle, they have little reason to be on a site like BITOG. That...

Average new car price is $50K ? Insanity.

Ah, no pride, self respect. "Monkey see, monkey do". Go get 'em, tiger. Get on that bandwagon! Surely, they'll see it from your point of view. They'll simply go make or borrow more money, and "beaters" will be wiped from the face of this planet in no time! Such brilliance! Hard to believe no...

Swap engine/engine rebuild vs. just fix the oil leak

Average new car price is $50K ? Insanity.

I'm not sure anyone actually PREFERS to drive "beaters". Most who do are simply doing their best with what they have. Rare are the people who claim "I have excess to spend, but driving my 250k mile 1997 Camry just really makes my day". But you are unwise to criticize someone who does drive an...

    1991 Reatta: She's home!

^^^Yes, that's a complete, if lacking in detail, summary. I don't see anything in their we don't already know. An engine, rushed into production to deal with CAFE standards, years later revised into a decent engine. Actually a relatively common story during this time period. Did I miss something?

    1991 Reatta: She's home!

A, yes, because the most successful luxury names typically retain antiquated architecture in their vehicles. GM lived through your suggestion. Didn't pan out. Somehow, the Mercedes M119 and Lexus 1UZ far outclassed the 5.7 LT1 in the Fleetwood. For some reason, luxury clients don't care for a...

    1991 Reatta: She's home!

It's clear you have little or no experience with these. And that's fine, but you might want to refrain from making assumptions. As far as the core engine (not counting externals like fuel injection), 4.1 underwent several revisions. The 1988 4.5 built on that, which was again slightly revised...

What makes brakes wear like this?

Pads aren't moving like they should, whether it's because they are seized in the bracket or because the pins are stuck.

    1991 Reatta: She's home!

The 4.5 was a GREAT engine, especially in the '90+ models... Also, the 4.1 in the Allante isn't the same as the original HT4100. The 4.1 in the Allante included all of the 4.5 updates, just retained the old displacement.

    Odd 4l60e behavior

I've seen a few trans experts in here... 2008 Tahoe 1-2 shifs hard at part throttle. Little throttle and full throttle good. Other shifts feel good. MAYBE 2-3 slightly soft part throttle, but not noticable. Symptoms improve as temps increase. Cold is worst. Hot is very good. Replaced 1-2...

Struts need to break in before alignment?

If quick struts were installed, this can be true. Sometimes it will take a bit for the springs to settle. I've had sets that settle over the course of a week. The ride height may change slightly, which will change the camber.

Whoa! The Karen is strong with this one!

    Fake NGK plugs on Amazon

A related experience for me this week: My 2008 Tahoe started getting fishbite misfires at idle. Mode 6 data showed mostly cyl 4. Thought to myself, "can't be plugs/wires. Just installed them 2 years and 10k miles ago". Swapped coils and injectors between cylinders. No change. Pulled the...

Might purchase a 1991 Buick Reatta

Big fan of these old E/K GM cars. Had many myself. The V6 doesn't do the chassis justice. Get an Eldorado. The 4.5/4.9 is much smoother and torquier, it looks sharper, much better interior materials and build quality.

    2017 Silverado AFM Disabler

The whole "lifters still fail when disabled" thing...as I understand it, there are multiple modes of failure on these engines. 1. Afm lifter pins/body breaking. This results in permanently collapsed lifter. Disabling can prevent wear of these parts, and remove controls like the VLOM from the...

    2015 Ford Expedition EL

I also agree that this Expedition probably isn't ideal. I think that if a full sized van isn't doable, you're probably best sticking with what you have, making it work best you can.

Water pump job mishap - broken heater hose

This has been a "problem" ever since plastic in the cooling system became common, in the '80's Is it better than the old copper, brass, aluminum systems of old? Yeah, I think so. No more corroded fittings, pitted hose sealing surfaces or gasket surfaces, leaky solder joints, which I feel like...
