Thickest oil grade you have run in winter, summer?

Block heater’s and leaving it running all night long. Things were simpler back then.

    Oil availability going forward

Yes. One of the reasons I take such good care of my personal truck is so I can neglect and abuse it when the time comes. Neglect and abuse it all the time and it will not be reliable during the apocalypse.

    Oil availability going forward

I’m a fleet manager and it is getting harder and harder to get the oil I use for my fleet. The oil deliveries are getting fewer and farther between. Pretty soon I will have to look into other oil options And or extend my service intervals even farther.

Thickest oil grade you have run in winter, summer?

Back in the day I ran Castrol HD-30 year around here in Michigan. Winter. Summer. Didn’t matter. Did that for years with zero issues. That is still what I use in my lawn mower. But in my truck I use Castrol Syntec 5w-30.

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

Because transportation industry tax loophole. Any thing I buy to keep my current fleet on the road is tax deductible. If I fill out the proper forms, then I am tax free at the place of purchase as well as getting special pricing. I get special pricing on tires, a $185 re-tread is $150 after my...

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

I am getting gallons cheaper than a drum, a case of 4 gallons is easier to transport and store than a drum, no hand pump, no huge up front purchase price. My supplier, who I worked for years and years ago, cuts me a deal, no shipping or delivery charge because I pick it up from him, and he will...

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

Okay, so….from mid November to the first of the year I have been to busy to even think about him. I’ve been letting the status quo go. Now that things have slowed down, I am tightening the reins. He has been using the oil I supply for the diesels but still not for the gas engines. He still is...

    Mobil 1 EP 5w30 20k...my new normal

I drove 25k last year with my Land Cruiser, I expect 30k this year, I use Castrol Syntec 5w-30 and change it every 5k because there are also 4 u-joints, 2 slip yokes and ball joints and tie rod ends that need to be greased. I would never go 20k on a single oil change unless I had a 8qt or...

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

I fully understand and do not blame you for not reading 12+ pages of thread, the mechanic is on retainer, he owns the shop, I pay him $X per week to work on and prioritize my equipment. He is a independent shop, he is allowed to work on others equipment too. I pay him well for the privilege of...

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

Okay guys, sorry, I did not realized my thread was still going strong. The mechanic is still employed by me, I let things slide until the new year. Pick my battles and all. On one of my trucks up here I have sent in a oil sample to Blackstone Labs and I am waiting the results. I have finally...

    Engine suddenly consuming oil

Go back to the oil you were using and see if it changes anything. I had a Land Rover that ”used” a quart of oil a week with zero leaks, zero smoke UNLESS I used only one brand of motor oil. I always used Rotella T6, never used oil. Switched to Delo because it was on sale and it started...

    Prepper - Oil Stash

This is easy, Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 full synthetic diesel oil. And then I double my oil change intervals on the ones I drive everyday. Skip oil changes on the tractor and the Honda. Assuming the Suburban is a 4x4, that one stays in the best shape because it is the one that can get you almost...

Oil filters. Which ones you guys like / trust / recommend for normal condition driven sedans?

For my fleet I use NAPA Gold, 10k oil change intervals. The NAPA filters work out to about $5/ea because I buy the pro pack (case of 12, no box for each filter)l, I get a fleet discount and no taxes on them. For my personal truck, I use Purolator One. 5k oil changes, about $6/ea because I buy...

Ford recommends semi synthetic. Why not full???

Years ago I read a leaked letter from a Ford engineer about their choice for motor oil. Here are the reasons they chose syn blend instead of full syn or dino juice. To move a F-150 down the highway at a constant 60 mph only requires 50 horsepower. So the engine is not working hard most of the...

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

No, I always check fluids after they’ve been sitting all night, so no wiping needed. The dipstick on these is r-e-a-l-l-y long, like 3ft long.

You’re close. And that’s varnish on the dipstick, not oil.

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

I replaced 4 of the 5 air filters this morning. Did not get to the 5th truck before it left. Does anyone want to guess the mileage on the engine that this dipstick belongs to?

Mechanic won’t use oil I’ve chosen

He gets a salary. We are currently looking for a new mechanic. I am going back down there next week for the week and I am going to talk to a mobile fleet guy who I have seen around. He is getting paid, we pay him to work on and prioritize our fleet. He came with the purchase of the delivery...
