    1996 Dodge Ram 5.9

Just bought a 1996 Dodge Ram B3500 with the 5.9 gas engine, +/- 76K miles. No owner's manual included. What is the right oil for this engine? I'm guessing 10w-30 but I'm also guessing there are folks here who know.

    H4 LED Replacement

Didn't see anything specific to motorcycles with a search on LED replacement for H4 halogen on a motorcycle . . . so . . . any experience or recommendations? Considering these at the moment: https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/cyron-1500-lumen-h4-led-headlight-bulb?rrec=true&sku_id=10152002...

1993 Chevy 3/4 ton 5.7 liter (350) knock on startup

I don't know what filter is on there, it's not my truck yet, but I will start there. Looking on line with a web search, for whatever that is worth, it seems like this might be a common problem on the older 350s and relatively inconsequential. But if there is an easy and inexpensive fix I'd...

1993 Chevy 3/4 ton 5.7 liter (350) knock on startup

1993 Chevy 3/4 ton, a little over 200,000 miles, 5.7 liter / 350 CID carbureted, there is a pronounced top-end knock on startup, then it goes away in a few seconds. Any thoughts on what this is, what could be done about it, and if it even needs to be fixed?

    How Cool Is Too Cool?

Thank you -- this is the context I was looking for. If the only concern is moisture, and if the oil is working the way it's supposed to at relatively low temperatures, that addresses my concern. I just didn't want to be inadvertently causing damage because the oil was not up to some design...

Good idea. I will look into this.

    How Cool Is Too Cool?

That question has probably been asked in other contexts, but here it's a 750cc air-cooled twin. Mostly splash lubrication, part of the system is pressurized, just enough to add a spin-on filter and an oil cooler. The original sump capacity was about two quarts, the cooler added almost a quart...

    Adventure Bike owners feedback

I was thinking the same thing after many years on Harleys so I bought an R1200GS. I wanted to like that bike but I didn't. I understand it's one of the most popular adventure bikes in the world for a reason, but it always felt like a heavy compromise to me. It was a little better than a Harley...

    Black Widow Ramps

Struck me exactly the same way. I bought a set of the low ones for working on an import car and it was immediately obvious that if I used these on a gravel driveway they would live up to their name. I hot-melt glued them to a couple of pieces of plywood to distribute the load and they work great.

rodents chewing fuel lines - what can be done?

Peppermint oil will repel certain rodents, as will cedar oil. Vicks VapoRub works for other rodents in other parts of the country. Using any of the poisons that work as blood thinners to control rodents has a certain risk -- if a dog eats the dead rodent the dog can also be killed. Sometimes...

Lets generate a list of bad engines to avoid.

Not a bad engine but a terrible injector configuration in the Duramax from 2001 to mid-2004. They're under the rocker covers so they are expensive to have changed by a shop and when they leak you won't necessarily realize it until fuel dilution happens.

    Ural OCI

Yes, that's the factory recommendation. The engines are clunky and loose and run hot, they are the Russian version of a BMW if that explains anything. From what I can tell a lot of the wear is in the valve train, it's unsophisticated, shall we say, as is the oiling system. I'm thinking higher...

    Ural OCI

750cc Ural crankcase only holds about two quarts, recommended oil is any automotive 20w-50, recommended OCI is 2,500 km. This sometimes means changing oil on during the trip. Not the end of the world but not what I want to be doing while traveling, either. I will be installing an external...

    Determining Dilution Of Coolant

Reading here in the forum I see that somewhere around 50/50 ration of water to coolant concentrate is optimal and the freeze point is elevated by too much water and by too little water. I'm looking at green coolant, it's clean, and the Prestone hygrometer says the freeze point is 7 degrees F...
