Not so fast... if you compare iron wear per 1,000 miles, it's almost the same--about 1.3 vs 1.4 ppm per thousand miles. Hardly a "massive reduction in iron"... Still, nice UOA!

GC or ASL for long OCI?

pscholte, I'm surprised! I agree with Quattro Pete, the starting TBN doesn't necessarily predict what the TBN will be after use. My vote goes to GC Yuk, if your friend is willing to spend the extra $$ for ASL, I think he'll be getting a better oil by spending that $$ on Delvac 1.

No decrease in oil pressure seen with Purolator Pure One

Patman: Hmm, it's hard to tell, because the tick marks on the oil pressure gauge are so far apart... but it looks about the same. I'll take a closer look. At idle with cold oil, oil pressure is slightly higher with the fresh Pure One filter. edwardh1: Thanks for the info!

Who believes they're getting worse fuel economy after switching to GC?

If anything, this 2000 BMW 528i gets better gas mileage now on GC--about 0.5 to 1.0 mpg better than before.

    HT/HS value: specs and reality

Thanks for sharing the info! Some things I found interesting: -M1 0W-40 HT/HS tested out at 3.9, better than its rated spec of 3.6 -Valvoline Maxlife 10W-40 tested out at 4.2 -Castrol 10W-60 (BMW M3 oil) tested out at 5.8! -Castrol SLX Longlife II is only part ("teil") synthetic??? [ June...

No decrease in oil pressure seen with Purolator Pure One

One of the cars I'm taking care of has an oil pressure gauge ('99 Camaro with the 3800 Series II V6) and I thought it would be interesting to compare the oil pressure of a Purolator Pure One compared to what was on there before, a regular STP oil filter. I used the stock filter size for both...

What were the insolubles? Curious how the K&N oil filter did.

    9,000-mile results are in!

Why all the Blackstone bashing? Blackstone is a good lab. Sure, the Amsoil TBN is falling fast, but 1.9 is still acceptable. If and when it hits 1.0, that's the time to dump this oil. Not sooner, not later! Come on, guys... look at the data objectively, and stop being so emotional.

    20W-50 in a 2.3 non turbo Saab

Agreed... My SAAB loves these oils, which you can find at Walmart in Canada: GC 0W-30 Delvac 1 5W-40

    Amsoil Being Amsoil

I use synthetic, but with most cars, I agree it's not necessarily cheaper, even when you extend the OCI. Many cars can do 5,000 miles on a good dino. 25,000 miles/5,000 miles = 5 oil changes 5 changes*5 quarts/change=25 quarts of oil 25 quarts of Chevron Supreme * $1/qt = $25 5 Supertech...

2003 Corolla 5-spd: 3,000 miles on unknown dino oil

Ran a bottle of Redline SI-1 fuel system cleaner during this interval, looks like it didn't hurt anything.

Has anyone seen the new Scion tC?

Should be interesting! Is this based on the same platform as the latest Corolla and Matrix? The hoodline looks a little tall, like on those cars. I hope they fix these traits: 1) Please eliminate the massive understeer which plagues virtually all the FWD Toyotas I've driven in the past decade...

    M1 0W40 stops oil consumption?

Yup, I saw this happen with M1 0W-40 on a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT (V6), and a 2001 Audi A4 2.8Q (also a V6). With the Eclipse, oil consumption was reduced after a couple of thousand miles, and with the A4, the oil consumption went to zero after a couple of oil changes.

    M1 Properties Table

Could we add a couple of figures? TBN of 0W-40 is 12 (VOA here) TBN of 5W-30 is 11.8 (according to this site, mile 0* in the chart) Thanks!

2002 BMW 325Ci - 2 years without an oil change...

Here in the United States, BMW will change your oil for you "gratis" once a year if you don't drive the mileage specified by the maintenance computer. Best oil for this engine? Undoubtedly, German Castrol 0W-30! See this analysis -- it's clearly superior to the Castrol 5W-30 used by BMW.

'03 Saab 9-5 Aero, 3,776 miles on "Saab synthetic 5W-30"

Lead is usually from lower bearing wear and it can be increased by lugging, which stick shift drivers sometimes do, especially with a turbo. Thanks for posting this UOA! Jason [ May 20, 2004, 01:49 PM: Message edited by: quadrun1 ]
