Has anybody removed there 'splash shield' aka 'belly pan' permanently

I leave them on. Unlike the LS400, the LS430 has a little access cover in the under cover so you can get to the oil filter. The Highlander has under covers under the engine and side covers down to the rear suspension.

Are oil filter cap wrenches useless?

I don't care for them either. I don't know if it's a mis-match between the filter or wrench; aftermarket filters + OEM wrench, or vice-versa. I wonder if an OEM filter and OEM wrench combo will work better? I just use a strap wrench or the 16" Channel-locks.

What are you working on today?

Under the hood; stuff like this annoys the heck out of me. The air intake was held on these. I'd install the correct fasteners/clips but these fasteners from the Lexus parts book are totally wrong. I think I'll go with rivet nuts. There was a K&N filter in the box. The filter appears to...

What are you working on today?

Went around the LS430 correcting all the crap I found earlier. Who ever was working on this thing before I got it, needs a swift kick. For such a low mileage car there's a lot of places that show just crap workmanship. Replacing missing/incorrect clips in the trunk. Found one, origin unknown...

Car Care Nut -Why you shouldn't wait 100k mi to change coolant on a Toyota UR series V8.

Assuming the argument that head gasket failure is a trend, and it's warping of the engine block is a contributing factor - I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the UR engine block being an open deck design? The UZ engines are closed deck and head gasket failures are rare with these...

    Dad's 1947 Lincoln coupe

I was expecting to see on old "tea-pot" Holley carburetor. I think those were used in the 1950's. I've never worked on one or seen one in operation. The parts store I worked at in the 1990's had a new one in the box.

Have you ever stopped along the highway and picked up a stray 5 gallon bucket?

No. But I had to pull over after I ran over one with the Safari and it got wedged under the front bumper. I also hit an empty 5-gallon water cooler bottle. It exploded on impact. Both incidences occurred before dawn on the interstate.
