Is There a Specific Tool to Test Belt Tension

What do you guys think about a Rapala Fish Hook Scale, PULLING the belt from below and trying to read the deflection by holding a ruler. That's what I did. Completely inaccurate? Basically the service manual says to PUSH the mid point from above with 22 lbs, then they state the amount of...

    civic started running hot tonight.....

No he shouldn't. He just said he's never worked on a car before - replacing the thermostat is not somewhere to start.

Is There a Specific Tool to Test Belt Tension

I found a few tom - they range from 17.00 to 125.00. OTC, Browning, Gates.

Wow - sounds good. Have any idea the price range tom? I've never seen these for sale before. Is there a technical name for it.

Is There a Specific Tool to Test Belt Tension

Re: Timing Belt Tension & Drive Belts Not working on a stand, I had a hard time measuring the deflection of the belts with 22 lbs force. Is there a tool that makes this easier when stuff is blocking in the way. Top access to the belt is possible, but I can't see a side view.

    Detonation

If it was that over advanced though, wouldn't it detonate and you would get loud pinging immediately before losing any power?

    Detonation

Thanks Buick - but I do know what timing marks to use - it's in the service manual - just as Trav posted. The thing is, the LH side is half a tooth off on either side of the dot, so one has to pick and choose. I likely picked the wrong side originally. We'll see though. There's not much else to...

    tranny flush

They have to be careful over torqing the drain plug. The metal at least on my oil pan is really thin, and I could see stripping a possibility if overdone enough. Likely they would just leave it in place so you don't figure out until next oil change. 22 ft-lbs should suffice, but I would check...

How Many Times Can a Car Be Overheated?

Last night the area around my radiator was getting slightly steamy (or smokey I couldn't tell) when I was 10 degrees over advanced during my testing (idling). The coolant gauge on the dash board remained in the center. The car was still on jack stands. I immediately turned it off, and water or...

    Detonation

yes, that's from the service manual - same as mine. That's how the LH dot looks now, slightly to the right of the rear cover dot. Although the cartoon drawing may look that way because of the angle of their drawing, and plus, it's just that - a cartoon. Thanks though Trav, let's see what...

    Detonation

Thanks Flanso. I think your right about the combustion in the exhaust manifold all the way down to the down pipe. = retarded. When I started moving the distributor and the marks moved towards the arrow, the idle speed went up, and that misfiring sound (exhaust sound) started going away, which...

Sometimes the filter is deep within the valve body and non user-servicable and would require Overhaul Tear-Down to access it.

    Detonation

Thanks guys, I moved it over last night one tooth to the right. The belt actually has no markings on it, and the old one had no markings either. Plus the markings won't tell me where to position the camshaft pullies anyways, as really what the dots mean on the pulley is lining up the knock pin...

    Coating chassis with marine grease.

Oh, I tried Loctite Maxi-Coat by the way, and it doesn't seem that durable. I'll do more inspections tonight because I have the wheels off, but the loctite maxicoat is expensive, and seems to have dried away.

    Coating chassis with marine grease.

I've coated the metal parts with Rod Grease, much thicker than Marine grease. If you can find a Marine grease with aluminum then maybe that would be OK. The regular lithium EP grease will just wash off. The grease tactic works but it should be oiled first so it creeps in the cracks. If you a...

    Detonation

Thanks guys for the response. I made some progress. Drained the coolant, removed the hoses, removed the drive belts, and now down to the timing belt. Removed the covers. I can see visually that the RH side camshaft pulley (firewall side) dot is lined up perfectly with timing mark on the cover...

And what about question b). Knowing where my timing marks WERE in relation to the arrow, is this a detonation scenario.

    Detonation

OK, let me explain what happened. And tell me what to do. I turned the car on after overhaul, and I immediately needed to break in the new camshaft and new lifters for 20 min at 2000 RPM. Once I started the car, there was an insane exhaust sound like a leaking manifold, like the car was...
