"Shady Oil Testing Sucks" - LS JR

Some might also consider it a bit shady when not driven to publish a data sheet for your oils.

Oil filters seem lower quality these days.

At many shops, oil changes are basically a loss leader to attract business. That puts tremendous pressure on finding low cost sources of oil and filters. From my point of view it seems the cost of basic oil filters has not risen as fast as other products. So I suspect oil filter manufacturers...

    Monte Carlo - Feeling Nostalgic

I always liked the 1st gen. the best. You could choose from among various 350s, a 400 or a 454. Even a 4 sp. manual was available the first couple of years. As time went on, the 454 and 400 were no longer offered. But the 350 was still available thru '77. A manual trans was also offered again...

    Mazda AJTM-14-302 Filter Cut Open

Changed the oil on my daughter's van awhile back. After taking this filter off, I noticed that it had all the common characteristics of some Purolators (a Motorcraft FL820S in particular). I knew I would be cutting it open, so I asked her how long it had been in use. She didn't know for sure...

    Dex-Cool, or something else.

I run G-05 in my GM, Ford, and Jeep. Only the Jeep was G-05 originally. No problems so far. I converted the GM 6 years ago, the Ford only last year. I do like the fact that all three now use the same coolant. But it was a hassle to adequately flush the old coolant out the GM and Ford.

Need 75w140 diff oil - 02' superduty with truetrac

I believe both the Mobil1 and Valvoline synthetic gear oils contain limited slip additives. If the bottle says the gear oil is suitable for limited slip differentials as is (without any additional friction modifier) it likely has friction modifiers already included. If the bottle says the gear...

    Filter Manufacturers Council?

Purolator hasn’t really proven anything. They are simply making a vague statement about their defect level. Let’s make a few rough assumptions. Purolator states that their defect rate is “minute fractions of a percentage point”. Let’s assume .1%, which is 1/10 of 1%. Let’s also assume that...

Need 75w140 diff oil - 02' superduty with truetrac

Eaton recommends a gear oil without limited slip (LS) additives, preferably a non-synthetic. Most off-the-shelf 75W90 synthetic gear oils now contain LS additives. There are some 80W90 gear oils readily available without LS additives. I haven't researched what 140W gear oils might be available...

    Anyone ever run M1 0w40 in a 4.0 Jeep?

My son is running it in his '96 Cherokee. I bought it new and ran 10W30 M1 for the first 12 years or so. Since then he's run mostly the 0W40 M1. Has over 250k on it now. Still runs pretty good but the rear main leaks very badly.

How does the standard Wix ADBV operate?

The construction of the green filter does seem odd to me. As you say, the extension (collar) on the media endcap seems shorter than needed to provide ample ADBV space given the baseplate design. Of course, testing or actual use would establish the performance of the design. If the ADBV gap is...

    Filter Manufacturers Council?

You could contact them. But Purolator's (MANN + HUMMEL) membership in the FMC may have an influence on any answer given.

How does the standard Wix ADBV operate?

Among the several brands of oil filters I've cut open, I've never seen one that "sandwiched" the ADBV in the manner of the green one pictured. When assembled the Fram, Wix, Purolator, and various Champion oil filters all leave gaps "behind" the ADBV. Might you be able to post some photos of the...

When to do first oil change on a new engine

As I said, "Other than the cost ($25 or so), I see no down side to an “early” first oil change unless special additives are used in the initial fill."

When to do first oil change on a new engine

The drain plug pictured is from a 2006 GMC Sierra 5.3L that I bought new. I was surprised that the factory drain plug was magnetic. When I saw how much iron was stuck on the plug I decided to snap a pic of it for future comparison. I understand that iron particles the magnet fails to catch may...

When to do first oil change on a new engine

I like to change mine out early. The pics below illustrate how much additional iron can be present in a new engine. First photo is of the magnetic drain plug at first oil change (less than 1K miles). Second photo is same engine and drain plug years later after a 4K OCI.

Looking for small saw- Stihl MS170 vs. Echo CS310

I have one of the 170 or 180 Stihls, not sure which exact model. I too had some concerns about the smaller chain. But after using it awhile, I don't find the smaller chain much less effective. Yes, the saw does cut a little slower than my larger Stihl. But not enough to make a big difference on...

Air compressor motor keeps tripping breaker

I know they supposedly checked it, but it still sounds like a bad cap, or connection to the cap. If there is a centrifugal switch associated with the cap, that might be a possibility. How easy is it to turn the pulley by hand (with the motor unplugged!)? Might also check the receptacle wiring...
