Why the auto repair industry gets a bad rep

In my experience, most of the auto repair industry earns their bad reputation. For every positive/no-issue repair I've had done, four or five have been botched or have had things overlooked/incomplete. Missing fasteners and loose parts are commonplace. It pains me to have "professional"...

Talk to me about MG Midgets

I have a soft spot for MGs. My first car was an MGB. I've also had some experience with older Midgets. But after owning a Miata, I would never consider another MG. The Miata I owned was beat on and had almost 200K on it when I sold it. Even after a hard life, there was no comparison between...

    Divorcing Mobil 1

I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. A '96 Jeep Cherokee with about 250K on it has had M1 almost exclusively and is still doing quite well and runs as quiet as any 4.0L with that many original miles. Except for a water pump, it's completely original inside. Not so much as a valve cover removed...

04 Jeep Liberty KJ with Only 25k Miles On It

Our '04 Liberty has been a very good vehicle. Couple more things: There is a baffle under the large oil fill cap. Remove it and clean it. It gets gunked up and will need cleaning if it's been neglected. If it's gunked up, also change the PCV valve that is mounted on the side of the oil fill...

Which Oil For : 1995 Jeep Cherokee I-6 Cylinder?

I bought a new one back in '96. Used 10W30 M1 year round for the first 120K miles. My son is driving it now. He's put about another 120K on it. He's been using mostly 0W40 M1. Internals are untouched and it still runs well. Does leak a little, mostly from the rear main.

    Old Non-Detergent

Ran onto this awhile back. This non-detergent oil was made by Pennzoil.

Eaton posi trac and diff fluid

You shouldn't need to add it every 5K. May just need a little more than the initial amount. Once the correct amount has been added, no additional should be required until the next lube change. At that point, you're basically starting over. Otherwise, I'd say something else is wrong.

Eaton posi trac and diff fluid

I've typically seen the recommendation to add more FM to address chatter. I would be tempted to try that first. I've also seen the recommendation to drive in several tight figure 8 patterns after a change to better distribute the FM. Not saying any of this will work for you, but I've had a few...

    Providing materials

Might be worth a try, but I wouldn’t have high expectations. I once priced a set of four tires from a store that perpetually offers 4 “free” oil changes with the purchase of four tires. I didn’t want their oil changes with bulk oil and cheap filters and offered to swap that for an alignment...

Any word on 20 vs 30 wt in new Mustang V6?

Rod, In that case, it sounds like the OP readings are real. Does your son's '12 Mustang have any kind of oil cooler? My '01 Cobra has an intermediate water filled jacket at the base of the oil filter mount.

Synthetic label - are you sure?

Thanks for posting the article. I found the following quote of the most interest: How does a consumer know that the motor oil they are paying a premium for is in fact synthetic? I'm fine with establishing requirements for “synthetic” product. But why not sharpen the point a bit: Is the API...

    2001 Mustang Cobra Coolant

Conversion to G-05 complete. I was able to get out 8 of the 14 quarts by draining the radiator and removing a lower hose. Four flushes with distilled water and in went the G-05. Everything looks clean so far.

    Oil Questions (Mower)

I been running GC in my 27HP air cooled Kohler for the last 9 years. I think it's a top notch mower engine oil. I spent some time at an outdoor equipment show with many of the mower and engine manufacturers present. Several had their house brand (Kohler, Briggs, etc.) oils on display. A quick...
