I have this long crank time as well on the MR20DE engine. No CEL. Happens when very hot out. Thinking it could be crank sensor, but with no CEL or pending codes, I'm not sure. I did run a bottle of Techron, (I mean it can't hurt to do so, right?), and so far, it has been much better. No long...

The coils on my 02 Jetta started going out around 80k. The CEL only showed 1 coil with weak voltage, but then the other 3 also showed up at some point.

My previous car, an 2002 Jetta had similar problem. To me, it sounds like a starter motor itself, or the starter solenoid. I ended up getting the starter replaced. It made the same clicking and humming sounds as you describe.

I have no personal experience with them, but from what I have read on here, they are nice quality. I wouldn't fret over it at all, especially since it's free.

Yes. Get it done soon before it fails completely. I let the starter go for too long on my previous car ('02 Jetta) because it didn't squawk each time, so it failed at some point. Luckily, at home in the drive.

That sounds like your alternator..... Not sure. It could be lots of things.

Sounds like starter motor still spinning. It could be the solenoid not disengaging. I had '02 Jetta that made a squawking noise after cranking. It didn't do it all the time. It ended up being the starter.
