With these new transmissions that have the tedious leveling and temp requirements for fluid level checks

When the transmission is level. Sometimes the drivetrain doesn't line up with the body lines. But in general....close enough should be fine. I just eyeball it. And I do miss the drainplug and dipstick option.

Advance Auto Parts to close 700+ stores.

Same here with AutoZone AND Advanced. They want them back in the original containers....and I've been asked for a receipt to prove I bought the oil from them! They used to have a big dumping bin you could just walk over to and dump your oil but now they want you to leave the containers so they...

RAYBESTOS Element 3 coated rotors or ...

I just bought and installed a Raybestos front pad/rotor kit from Rockauto for my 2021 GMC Canyon, the price was too good to pass up. Included the Element3 coated rotors and the R-Line ceramic brake pads. This replaced the OEM brake rotors and pads. I like the rotors but I'm not a big fan of...

Rislone Engine Treatment - Smells like Strong Chemicals

Not yet but I'm thinking about it. My wifes 2016 Mazda CX-5 goes through about a quart every 2-3k miles. I've done a B12 piston soak and am currently running a quart of HPL's EC30 engine cleaner in with some synthetic oil for about 3k. I plan to change and inspect the oil filter at 1,000 miles...

5W-30 synthetic for Gen 1 SBC with roller cam

I'd be happy with whatever full synthetic is on sale at Walmart, but I'd probably stick with Mobile 1 Extended Performance for the fun of it. Even their house brand SuperTech would be just fine.

    List of cars you've owned

My father was a mechanic and had his own shop...so I had access to many FREE/abandoned cars that needed to be brought back from the dead. Usually a blown motor or transmission, or both. In order of ownership... Me: - 1978 Chevrolet Camaro. Made a good one out of two bad ones. - 1988...

Does increasing oil pressure improve mpg?

Engine Masters, a show on the MotorTrend network did an episode on this. The answer is that high volume or high pressure pumps don't really start to impact horsepower until you get to a very high horsepower level, like 700+. They also covered filters, measuring flow in GPM and horsepower. No...

2020 Ranger Rear Pad/Rotor Replacement Notes (Quality is job....whatever)

I've got a 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 and just did my front brakes. Bought Raybestos Element3 rotors and Raybestos R-Line ceramic front pads. Not very impressed with the pedal feel. Good initial bite but I have to put some pedal effort to get it to stop the way I like. Nice firm pedal but just not...

Steering repair parts for Ford Flex

My father recently retired and was a mechanic for over 50 years and had his own shop for almost 40. He used to swear by Moog. Even though they were the pricier option they always came out on top and never led to many call-backs. Around 10 years ago he started to notice a difference where the...

Fix and flip - should fluids be done before selling?

I'd change the oil with the cheapest available as that is probably as far as a prospective buyer will check. I'd make sure the other fluids were topped off. I'd consider a spill and fill of the transmission fluid if it looked like it needed it...but probably not.

Waste Oil Heater vs Propane Heater for Garage?

@tbm5690 I do have NG in the house, though at the wrong end of the basement which would probably not be a problem for a pipe fitter. The problem will be going out of the house and underground to the garage and back up. The house and garage will probably be about 20ft from each other with a...

    I now have a $72k shoulder

My dad retired one year ago after being a mechanic for nearly 50 years. His back is toast and he needs reconstructive surgery but is avoiding it because he thinks he will never walk again afterwards (and can barely walk now). He shoulder is all sorts of messed up and needs to be replaced and...

Waste Oil Heater vs Propane Heater for Garage?

This is why I'm here. Just about everyone has mentioned mini-splits so I'm going to have to look deeper into that. Natural Gas is available at the street but the gas company is going to charge me 100% for the excavation, site prep, police detail, etc. Probably a non-starter. If I go propane...

Waste Oil Heater vs Propane Heater for Garage?

The reason I brought up a waste oil burner is because I'm quite used to them... My father owned a 6-bay auto repair shop in MA and heated it 100% with his waste oil for at least 25 years. 68F during the day and he turned it down to 55F at night. His building was probably triple the size of...

Waste Oil Heater vs Propane Heater for Garage?

@LenZee That is the hard part, figuring out how much fuel I will be using. A small burner like the Lanair XT75 uses about 0.5 gallons per hour and it won't be running continuously once it is up to temp. I can take 5 gallon jerry cans and fill them up with diesel or home heating oil locally...

Waste Oil Heater vs Propane Heater for Garage?

I'll be building a 30'x30' workshop/garage in the not too distant future. Not as a business, just my home garage...hobby shop....and happy place. It will be in MA which gets pretty chilly winters and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with Waste Oil Heaters and Propane heaters in a small...

Amazon to help fund new nuclear reactors

Microsoft and Google (And I'm sure others) have also done similar things lately. Their AI datacenters, supercomputers, etc use an insane amount of electricity and nuclear is the only clean way to feed them, otherwise they get labeled as energy hogs and big environmental polluters. Modern...

HPL EC treatment started. 2007 Camry 2AZ-FE 153k consumption.

Great job! Before you dump the SuperTech oil that is in there now and go back to the HPL EC....maybe try another round of BG EPR? My rationale is that the piston soaked may have cured everything, loosened some crud, or done nothing! Perhaps the BG EPR will take care of anything that is left...

    Engine Swap Advice

@Cruck aside from drivable MPG's what are your end goals? 400hp in an old square body can be a handful if the rest of the truck isn't 100% up to snuff. I really think a good rebuild on the old 350 with an overdrive transmission is the way to go. The heads are tiny and stink on the smog Era...

    Engine Swap Advice

This is all true but can be highly dependent on location too. I'm probably going to spend $1,500 on a complete engine with 150k miles in my area and probably another $500 for the ECM and harness, at least. That is for the garden variety 5.3's. If I want a 6.0 or 6.2 its going to be higher...
