    Oil Weight Question

lol....I clicked on this from the "latest threads" on the main page not realizing it was in the "humor" section!!!! I was about to go full dad-splaining mode haha. I did put gear oil into an engine once. It worked! Had a Jeep 4.0L I6 that spun a rod bearing. Normally ran 5W-30, switched to...

Thermostat opinions - Lower Set point for Summer

Seriously...your best option is to have a tuner set the Fan-On temp to something like 200F and Fan-Off temp to 190F. It will cost a lot less than you think and can even be done through the mail. They will send you an OBDII-to-USB cable that will connect to a laptop and it will take all of 5...

Best HPL for Oil Burning Toyota 22RE

@DirectRejection Thanks! And for all others...this is a pleasure vehicle and as such $$$ doesn't really matter as much. Considering I change the oil once per year I'm not too picky about the cost. I'll probably spend more on wax than I will any oil. Considering I've already done a long soak...

Best HPL for Oil Burning Toyota 22RE

20W-50 is a common oil for these engines. Many would run a 5W-30 in the winter and a 10W-40 in the summer....when these engines were new! 40 years and 150-200k miles later I wouldn't hesitate to run 20W-50 in it during the summer. It usually a toss up on what premium 10W-40 or 20W-50...

Best HPL for Oil Burning Toyota 22RE

You are probably right... But to satisfy my curiosity the question still stands. Does any one of the HPL oil lines have the potential to clean better than another?

Best HPL for Oil Burning Toyota 22RE

I did that on my wife's Mazda CX-5. An OCI with EC-30, an OCI with HPL Premium Plus, now an OCI of VRP since it is cheaper. Doesn't burn oil anymore. But....22RE's are notorious for low oil pressure at idle by design and with years of wear I'm a bit nervous to put a 30 weight in there. The...

Best HPL for Oil Burning Toyota 22RE

I have a 1987 Toyota 4Runner with the 22RE. 4Runner has 98k miles, miles on the 22RE are unknown. I got it 25 years ago for dirt cheap since it needed body work and an engine as the head gasket let go and went full milk-shake. Put a junkyard engine in it.... I was 18 at the time and don't...

Post your Gas Mileage : Calculated

1987 Toyota 4Runner with a 22RE/5-spd. Stock 4.10 gearing and larger 31" tires. 225.9 miles (GPS verified), 9.43 gallons of gas. 23.96 mpg! Mostly highway.

    Broken clavicle / collar bone

Ouch. Broke my left one when I was 9 playing hockey. Broke my right one sledding when I was 11. FYI...don't ride a sled down a hill like a surfboard. This was 30+ years ago. They gave me a figure 8 brace both times and sent me on my way. I hated that thing and didn't wear it with the...

Sienna: can she use these 225 on 235 size van

If cash is available for new tires....get new tires. According to Dr. Google, for the General Altimax RT45, the load carrying capacity is 1709lbs per tire for the 225/60R17 and 1874lbs for the 235/60R17. That's a total of 660lbs of capacity difference. If this minivan just holds a couple...

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

Update. Insurance adjuster came and thinks it will be repairable. Initial estimate is $4,300 and the repair shop will now take some stuff apart to assess any hidden damage. Fingers crossed because I didn't want a car payment! The real pain is the person at-fault's insurance. A 17 year old...

    Chassis power washing

I've had good success with POR15's Cleaner/Degreaser. Works better than Simple Green or Purple Power. Doesn't leave a residue like Gunk's Degreaser.

Diesel - How long can I actually store it?

I don't have anything that operates on diesel but my dad's 1980 Case Tractor starts up whenever we need to use it. The diesel that is in there is 3-5 years old. Sits outdoors in the MA summers and winters. At some point we'll re-fuel it with the 5 gallon can that has been sitting in his...

GM 2.4L Ecotec LAF/LEA - Any known problems?

You are correct! 2013-2017's came with the optional LFX V6. I must have made a mistake in my notes. If I go with the 2nd generation Equinox I'm still shooting for a 2016-2017 with the V6. There was a mid-cycle refresh for 2016 and I like the styling a bit better.

GM 2.4L Ecotec LAF/LEA - Any known problems?

For the 2nd Generation Equinox (2010-2017), there was a re-fresh for the 2016-2017 years. The 2010-2015 got the 3.6L LLT (Trash) or the 2.4L Ecotec LEA (Trash). The 2016-2017's got the 3.6L LFX engine, which is good! The 2.4L LEA (Trash) carried over through 2017 as well. For the 2018+...

GM 2.4L Ecotec LAF/LEA - Any known problems?

Her 2016 Mazda is paid off and we really don't want a car payment. Trying to keep the cost <$11k and <100k miles if possible. The 2016-2017 refreshed 2nd generation Chevy Equinox looked like a good option but they come with the 2.4L Ecotec LEA. Another option is a 2013-2016 GMC Acadia...

GM 2.4L Ecotec LAF/LEA - Any known problems?

My wife's 2016 Mazda CX-5 got hit and I'm preparing for the next vehicle in case it gets totaled. The 2016-2017 Chevrolet Equinox's look like a good choice for us. Not very exciting but a solid platform and they are pretty affordable. That said...the Equinox's that we are looking at come with...

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

Think so? In MA the law states to use the "Total Loss Formula" which is the Fair Market Value minus the Scrap Value. KBB and my own searching show that Fair Market Value to be around $9-11k depending on private party or dealer. Scrap Value is about $500 based on internet estimates. Even if...

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

Picture just to complain a bit more. For the record my wife is fine. Got a bit of whiplash and was a bit dizzy so they sent her to the hospital as a precaution. CT scan and X-ray were fine...just a stiff neck for a few days. The fender got pushed back a bit but didn't damage the door. The...
