Are you charging batteries on your DD?

The fact that good maintainers - like CTEK - switch to a float mode, I don't think you can hurt a battery by connecting it pretty often.

CRC markets a GL-4 non synthetic. Also, Red Line MT90 is easy to find and it's a synthetic GL-4.

    Gl-5 or gl-4

I'm trying to determine the correct differential fluid for my car. It's a BMW 1 Series. It isn't clear if the fluid should be GL-4 or GL-5. The parts info shows a different fluid for earlier models but the differential is the same part number across all years. Is there any harm in using one...

    Gas prices explained

^ That may have been the case for a very simple refinery. In a more complex refinery some of the naphtha stream is blended into gasoline directly but most goes to a downstream unit (the reformer) and makes pretty high octane blending stock. There is some adjustment that can be made trading off...

    Gas prices explained

Good read on octane differentials https://www.eia.gov/analysis/octanestudy/ If you're so inclined you can slog thru the full report as it can be downloaded.

    Gas prices explained

Most of the higher price for premium over regular is being 'enjoyed' by the retail outlet. Manufacturing costs don't explain the big premium. Neither do spot market prices.

    Environmentally friendly gas can rant

I've spilled more gas using a poorly made environmentally friendly gas can. The spec these things to minimise spills and emissions then let them be made like junk.

    Motul Specific LL01-FE 5w-30 for BMW S55

If LL01 is in fact going away & being replaced by a LL01 FE, are NA engines missing out on anything with the FE oils vs plain old LL01 ?

    Castrol Edge 0W-40 lost LL-01?

I've focused on the statement "Additional N20 performance.... is needed" as maybe the reason the Edge lost LL01.

    Castrol Edge 0W-40 lost LL-01?

There are so many N51 and N52 engines in service I wish BMW would get a bit more granular and keep an LL01 spec for those engines. (or even include the N54 and N55). I'm not sure if Castrol Edge 0W40 is now not the right formula for my car (N52) or if it lost the cert b/c of the N20 testing. To...

    Castrol 5w40 vs Castrol 0w40

The shear in the 0W/40 is not much worse or even as bad as the 5W/40 if you take into account the spec viscosity for the 2 oils are 13.1 and 14.1, respectively? Edge 0W/40 is a 'thin' 40 grade.

    Castro Edge 0w/40 2013 BMW N52

Humidity isn't terrible high here and the car is garaged. Viscosity drop is probably fuel dilution as mightmousetech mentioned. Looking at a recent Edge 5W/40 UOA posted on here, the vis at 100 went from 14.1 to 11.22 after 9,500 miles. So I guess my decrease isn't that severe. Certainly going...

Slow getting this out here. This was an very short change interval mileage wise. It was a year from the last change and I've been going on 7,000 miles or a year - whichever comes first. The car does often see short runs (~8 miles) Blackstone thinks I could wait longer. I do my own changes and...
