    Oldest tool you regularly use?

My grandfathers flare nut wrenches from the early 60's as well as a bunch of his other tools. One of my top boxes is from the mid 70s, the other from the 80s. Dad has lots of tools he regularly uses from when he started in this business in the 70s as well as all my grandfathers stuff from the 60s

My Gates Water Pump Is Failing. Suggestions?

Whats the part number on the Delco pump? If it starts with 252 its a reboxed gates pump, is Delcos aftermarket line. It would be getting a Delco OE pump in my shop and bolts ordered separately as needed

2025 High School graduation gift ideas?

Is she going to college/higher education? If so, when I graduated high school all of my cousins went together and bought me a toolbox filled with all the stuff you forget to take to college, like packs of pens, highlighters, cough and cold medicine. All the stuff that you normally have in a...

    Scan tool to program key

It will do some, it will not do all. Once ford transitioned from timed access PATS to coded access pats aftermarket tools get iffy. Had to use FDRS and my VSP credential to do a 2020 Transit last week. Autel and Forscan would not do it

    Scan tool to program key

key fob on a grand prix isnt an immobilizer function and doesnt require VSP credentials. Any pro level tool that has RCDLR or BCM access depending on the year can program the fob.

    Staked axle nut?

Other than a Toyota with the hardened steel axle nuts I normally dont unstake an axle nut, just zip it off and replace with a new one on reassembly. For Toyota (and it would work on others as well) I have a 1/4 mortising chisel that I ground down slightly to fit in the slot in the axle that I...

    Starter welder

For an occasional play around with welder, a stick welder would not be my first choice. It was the hardest process for me to learn and it takes the most practice for me to get back into the groove on. Its probably been 2 years since I arc welded anything so I would have to burn through a few...

I am replacing slide pin boots on every brake pad change

Sold 235 axles worth of brakes last year and 210 sets of pin boots. All of the pin boots came from the parts store other than 1 set from a GM dealer because I got the pads and rotors for that truck from them. Getting pins and boots just isnt an issue

    Problem finding spring clamps

Most likely because no one buys them. From the dealer standpoint a new hose from Ford generally comes with the clamp installed and locked in the open position for installation. As far as parts stores go I have never seen a parts store stock a spring clamp, only ever worm gear clamps and to be...

Do shops charge women more for car repairs?

I dont because I am not a dishonest POS and I like to be able to sleep at night. I treat every customer how I would like my mother to be treated and fix every car like my mother will be driving it.

    New tool thread

Snapon calls that industrial finish. I have a couple large wrenches that I bought in industrial finish because they were a bit cheaper than chrome. The downside is they arent as easy to see as a chrome tool so if you set it down somewhere its not obvious. Not a huge deal on a 1 1/4" wrench

Who here uses a torque wrench on the cv axle nut?

Always. Whether it has any impact on the bearing depends on the design of the bearing & hub ass'y. If its the style where the hub is mushroomed over the back of the bearing, axle nut torque makes no difference. If it is the style where the shoulder of the axle butts against the bearing, axle...

    What's your favorite fleet filter?

We stopped stocking jobber grade filters over 10 years ago. We use OES/OEM only with rare exceptions, like the 2004 Dodge Stratus coupe that came in today. Its got a Mitsu engine in it, but no one catalogs the Mitsu OE filter we stock for Mitsus for it so I wont use it for liability reasons...
