I don't think I've ever really seen black either. My cars stay very clear close to 1000 miles then turn to yellow/orange up to about 3,000 miles. Then finally they get light brown/darker amber after that.

I would not go 45k miles either. I tend to go 2 years on my cars. One other reason to change the filter is that the gasket or other filter component could weaken from heat and debris, allowing a slight amount of dirt into the engine. Sure, probably a rare case, but I do always find the gaskets...

The engine will do fine with Mobil 1 5w-30. It is a quality product. I use Mobil 1 in several vehicles, and my Iron wear numbers are fine in UOAs.
